Recreation Program Assistant (Aquatics) The City of Concord’s Recreation Services Department is seeking a recreation professional with a background supporting Aquatics-related activities to serve as the next Recreation Program Assistant in the Aquatics Division.
The Recreation Services Department:
The Recreation Services Department is responsible for the development, implementation, and delivery of recreation and leisure time activities within the City of Concord. In addition to traditional youth, adult and senior programs, the Department also operates a Diablo Creek Golf Course, Camp Concord in Lake Tahoe, and schedules facility and picnic reservations. It also provides support to the Parks, Recreation & Open Space Commission, the Concord Pavilion Community Outreach Committee, and the Commission on Aging. The Recreation Services Department team consists of 14 full-time staff and approximately 125 part-time staff.
What you will be doing in this role:
The Recreation Program Assistant will assist in developing and implementing a wide variety of Aquatics-associated activities and services for varying age groups. The position will assist with recruiting, training, overseeing, scheduling and evaluating part-time Aquatics staff. The position will be responsible for opening and/or closing the facility during the week and on weekends. The Recreation Program Assistant will support special events such as swim meets and focus on marketing and delivering aquatic programs such as lap swim and contract classes. The incumbent will also perform pool and facility maintenance duties, monitor pool equipment, monitor and adjust water chemistry, conduct safety inspections and perform other duties as assigned to ensure the safe operation of an aquatic facility adhering to all safety standards set forth by Federal Regulations, State and County Health Codes and California Title 22 Health Code.
We are looking for someone who: - Is WSI, LGI, and AFO or CPO certified, or can obtain certification within six months of employment
- Is customer service oriented and community-minded, with vision and passion for the profession of recreation
- Is self-motivated, organized, and a solution-focused problem solver with the ability to multi-task while meeting deadlines
- Has the ability to manage facilities, programs and events
- Has the ability to recruit, train, schedule, lead, oversee and evaluate Limited Service staff
- Can work well in an environment with frequent interruptions and establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
- Works well independently and as part of a team
- Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Possesses strong computer skills
- Exercises good, ethical judgment in analyzing solutions, making decisions and recommending solutions to problems
- Preferably has some work experience in municipal recreation
- Is willing and able to work nights and weekends, as needed, to support the department and programs

Examples of duties include, but are not limited toAs assigned, plan, organize, conduct and lead recreational activities; coordinate facility operations and manage events in program areas such as adult sports, aquatics facilities, senior citizens, aquatics, youth services. Provides leadership and guidance for groups engaged in recreational activities and aquatics including sports, trips, crafts, games, classes, and special events.Develop and prepare promotional materials for review by others; disseminate promotional materials and implements the Recreation Division marketing plan.Coordinate facility reservations and events; prepare rental contracts and collect required documentation.Review event and program evaluation and collects statistical data to support PBB.Provides information and assistance by telephone and in person to recreation patrons, activity participants, school personnel and City staff.Monitor the use and care of facilities, and activity equipment and supplies; perform routine inspections; and generate work orders and order supplies as needed.Recruit and select Limited Service personnel.Provide leadership and guidance to Limited Service personnel through training, supervision, scheduling of work, and evaluations.May administer first aid, CPR and manage a lifesaving emergency.Performs routine facility maintenance.Promotes the City's Mission to make Concord a city of the highest quality by providing responsive, cost-effective, and innovative government services; understands and subscribes to the Vision and Values Statement adopted by the City.Performs other work as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of leadership techniques, of the principles of organization, and equipment associated with recreational activities and facilities.
Ability to plan, organize, and conduct recreational activities; to manage facilities and events; to effectively lead and monitor assigned activities; to lead part-time staff; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to maintain accurate records; to obtain a First Aid Certificate and a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate; to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; and to establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Education/Experience Education: Completion of the twelfth grade or the equivalent supplemented by college level coursework in recreation. Specialized training in assigned program area(s) is desirable.
Experience: Some experience leading recreational activities and coordinating facility operations.
OtherA California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment. Incumbents assigned to operate passenger vans must possess a Class B California Driver's License.
For Aquatics program, must be able to obtain the following certifications within six months of employment:
- American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification (WSI)
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification (LGI)
- National Recreation and Park Association Aquatic Facility Operator Certification (AFO) or Aquatic Council Certified Pool Operator Certification (CPO)
