Description

Position Information

This recruitment is promotional only. You must presently be a full or part-time regular or probationary County of Sonoma, Community Development Commission, Sonoma County Fairgrounds, or Sonoma County Water Agency employee in order to apply for this position.

The Regional Parks Department (RPK) has requested a department promotional certification to fill a Parks and Grounds Maintenance Supervisor position. Only qualified permanent and/or probationary RPK employees on the eligible list may be eligible for referral to the department for the advertised position . This employment list may also be used to fill future full-time or part-time positions as they occur during the active status of the list.
As the Parks and Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, you will supervise staff engaged in the maintenance of Sonoma County Regional Parks' grounds, bike trails, buildings and community centers, and marinas. Additional responsibilities will include:

Please note: Parks and Grounds Maintenance Supervisors require possession of a valid California driver’s license to operate County vehicles and travel between parks. These positions will work in varying weather conditions, wear a uniform, and may be assigned to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and other irregular hours.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience and Education : Any combination of education, training, and experience which would likely provide for possession of the knowledge and abilities herein. Normally, this would include graduation from high school or a General Education Degree equivalent, and three years of experience in the maintenance and construction of buildings and grounds at the semi-skilled level, which included at least two years at the level of lead worker.

License: Possession of a valid driver license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position. The position advertised on this announcement requires possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

A valid State of California Class A Commercial Driver’s License, including valid and appropriate California Endorsements is desirable.

Desirable Certifications: Depending upon assignment, possession of one or more of the additional licenses and/or certificates is desirable: An Arborist certificate; a general contractor’s license; a Pesticide Applicator’s license; a Playground Safety Inspector certificate; a Pool Operator certificate; a Water Treatment Operator (T1) certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board; and/or other comparable certificates.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of : methods, materials, and equipment used in building and parks maintenance and unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled construction work including carpentry, welding, masonry, plumbing, and electrical systems; landscape and grounds maintenance practices and procedures; operation, maintenance, and safety requirements of machinery and equipment; safety procedures associated with unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled maintenance work.

Working knowledge of: ADA requirements for assigned building and construction projects; sprays, pesticides and the proper means of controlling insects, parasites and plant diseases; the principles of supervision, training, and motivating staff; maintenance and operation of water and septic/sewer systems in parks; budgeting and expenditure control; hazmat and proper disposal of raw sewage.

Ability to: supervise and evaluate the work of parks and maintenance personnel performing unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled work; establish and maintain effective working relationships; follow oral and written instructions; make, interpret, and work from technical sketches, blueprints, circuit diagrams, and plans; estimate costs, labor, time, and materials to keep accurate records; prepare and present oral and written reports; read and write in English; perform arithmetic calculations; perform a variety of light and heavy unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled parks and building construction repair, and maintenance tasks; set priorities to comply with departmental work management systems; effectively answer questions from the general public; work independently; problem solve and make sound decisions; use electronic equipment to communicate.

Scores may be adjusted based on such factors as the number of candidates, anticipated vacancies, past practice, and natural breaks in the scores achieved by this group of candidates.
