JOB SUMMARY Do you have experience in conducting field inspections? Are you interested in inspecting residential and commercial constructions and working with general public, contractors, or developers while enjoying a breezy beautiful ocean view? Come join our team! The City of Manhattan Beach is actively seeking for an experience Senior Building Inspector for the Community Development Department. Under direction of a Principal Building Inspector or higher, inspect buildings and structures to ensure that construction or alteration work is being done in accordance with approved plans and applicable code provisions and do related work as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIESThe duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the class.
- Inspects buildings and structures that are being constructed, altered, moved, or demolished to ensure that work being done complies with provisions of the building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and related codes and ordinances.
- Determines whether or not inspected work is being constructed in a safe manner in accordance with approved plans and specifications.
- Inspects the quality of materials and methods of construction for footings, foundations, excavations, concrete work, framing, lathing, plastering, masonry and other construction phases.
- Inspects existing buildings to determine hazardous conditions.
- Provides information to builders, architects, and the general public regarding building code and ordinance requirements.
- Checks plans to assure compliance with applicable regulations and investigate reports of violations and issues of stop-work orders and citation notices when necessary.
- Keeps records of inspections made and actions taken.
- May be required to work shifts, weekends, and/or holidays.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES Education/Training/Experience: - A high school diploma or G.E.D is required.
- Four (4) years of construction inspection experience of which two (2) years must be in primary building trades of carpentry, plumbing, or electrical inspection or construction is required.
Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements: - Must have a valid California “C” driver’s license at the time of employment.
- Certifications by the International Conference of Building Officials or by another model code organization as a Building Inspector and a Combination Dwelling Inspector are preferred. Said certifications will be required within two years from date of hire.
Knowledge of: Pertinent building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, zoning codes and ordinances; proper construction methods; and General Safety Orders.
Ability to: Read, understand and correctly interpret technical codes and ordinances, building construction plans and specifications; maintain records and prepare progress reports; work effectively and cooperatively with others.

Part-time employees are enrolled in PARS (Public Alternate Retirement System). All part-time and seasonal employees contribute 7.5% each pay period on a pre-tax basis. If an employee reaches 1,000 hours within a fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th) or is already a CalPERS member, then they are enrolled in CalPERS (Public Employees Retirement System).
The City complies with California Labor Code 245-249 by providing paid sick leave for part-time hourly employees accordingly.
The City of Manhattan Beach does not provide medical/dental/vision benefits to part-time employees. Eligible employees enrolled in CalPERS may opt into a CalPERS medical plan.
