THE POSITION: The incumbent will supervises Medical Imaging Specialists, Radiologic Technologists, Per Diem Pool Radiologic Technologists, and imaging student interns. They will prepare and position patients for a variety of medical imaging procedures ranging from routine diagnostic x-rays to highly-specialized diagnostic tests. They will also oversee the operational network management of the acquisition and electronic archiving of all modality image studies to produce diagnostic images for interpretation by a Radiologist.
Located in an acute care setting, these duties include frequent patient lifting and transport via wheelchair or gurney, moving portable imaging equipment for bedside studies, and standing for extended periods. The role involves potential exposure to radiation scatter, infectious diseases, blood, and body tissues. Assignments may include day, evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts at VCMC or Santa Paula Hospital. Additionally, standby/callback requirements apply to Technologists in CT, Echocardiology, Ultrasound, MRI, Interventional Radiology, and PACS System Administration.

EDUCATIONAL/BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Incumbents may be eligible for educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree that is not required for the classification. Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill.

DEPARTMENT/AGENCY: Health Care Agency - Ventura County Medical Center/Santa Paula Hospital (VCMC)

Medical Imaging Supervisor is represented by the Services Employees International Union (SEIU) and is eligible for overtime compensation.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies for this position only, which is a Regular position. There is currently one (1) vacancy.

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

• Supervises Medical Imaging Specialists I-II-III, Radiologic Technologists and Radiologic Technologists-PDP I-IV;
• Monitors, and adjusts as needed, department schedule to ensure proper staffing twenty-four (24) hours/day, seven (7) days/week;
• Creates departmental staff schedules for specific modalities;
• Performs staff annual evaluations;
• Performs verbal counseling sessions to Medical Imaging Specialist I-II-III and Radiology Technologists and Radiologic Technologists PDP I-IV as needed;
• Assist in the interview process of candidates for open imaging department positions;
• Supervises and trains Radiologic student interns, as needed;
• Reviews special procedure requests from ordering physicians (i.e., biopsies, drainages, needle localizations, etc.) with radiologists for appropriate modality and indication prior to scheduling;
• Analyzes and evaluates appropriateness of exams and confers with radiologist (MD) for clarification;
• Evaluates projected cross-sectional images for clarity, content and scope of examination;
• Assesses and responds rapidly to emergency situations;
• Provides detailed anatomical statistics for interpretation by department physicians;
• Maintains inventory and orders pharmaceuticals and supplies;
• Prepares and positions patients for examination according to approved modality protocols;
• Operates various portable and stationary imaging equipment throughout the hospital to obtain images for diagnostic interpretation by Radiologists;
• Completes the billing process for each patient encounter utilizing all Radiology department electronic systems and the hospital electronic medical record system;
• Transports patients to and from the imaging departments when necessary;
• Schedules patients and coordinates examinations;
• Cleans and maintains modality specific equipment, including routine preventative maintenance, minor repairs and adjustments; and
• Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

These are entrance requirements to the exam process and ensure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:

A candidate must meet one (1) of the following education requirements:

• Graduation from a two-year allied health program in a patient care-related field; OR
• Graduation from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs in diagnostic medical sonography, diagnostic cardiac sonography, or vascular technology; OR
• Bachelor’s degree in sonography or vascular technology; OR
• Bachelor’s degree in any field and one (1) year of full-time clinical ultrasound or vascular experience (this experience cannot be applied toward the experience requirement below).

EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION

In addition to the education requirement above, candidates must meet one (1) of the following pathways:

Track A. Multi-Modality Imaging (Radiologic Track)

Experience:

• Seven (7) years of full-time experience performing duties in at least two (2) of the following imaging modalities, with demonstrated proficiency in one:
  • X-ray/Fluoroscopy
  • Computed Tomography (CT)
  • Interventional Radiology
  • Mammography
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Licensure/Certification (at time of hire):

• Valid Radiologic Technologist Certificate issued by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Radiologic Health Branch
• Fluoroscopy Permit (if required by assignment)

Required Certification (within one [1] year of hire):

• Certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in the primary modality, as applicable to assignment (e.g., CT, MR, Mammography, VI)

Track B. Single-Modality Specialty Track (based on specific education and training program completed)

Ultrasound / Vascular

• Experience: Seven (7) years of full-time ultrasound or vascular experience
• Certification: ARDMS or ARRT (Ultrasound specialty)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

• Experience: Seven (7) years of full-time MRI experience
• Certification (at time of hire or within one [1] year): ARRT (MR) or ARMRIT

Computed Tomography (CT)

• Experience: Seven (7) years of full-time CT experience
• Licensure (at time of hire):
  • Valid Radiologic Technologist Certificate
  • Fluoroscopy Permit (if required)
• Certification (within one [1] year of hire): ARRT (CT)

SPECIALTY LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS (AS APPLICABLE)

• Mammography:
  • Valid Radiologic Technologist Certificate
  • Mammographic Certificate
  • Fluoroscopy Permit issued by CDPH Radiologic Health Branch
• Radiologic-Based Specialties (CT, MRI, Interventional Radiology, PACS, EMR):
  • Valid Radiologic Technologist Certificate
  • Fluoroscopy Permit (if required by assignment)

Necessary Special Requirements (Tracks A and B) :

All specialty areas within the Medical Imaging Specialist series require CPR certification in addition to the specific specialty certifications listed above.

SUPERVISORY LEVEL REQUIREMENTS (Tracks A and B)

• Two (2) years of experience in a lead function training, directing, and evaluating the work of student technologists, Radiologic Technologists and Medical Imaging Specialists.
  
• Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in the applicable specialty area.
  
• Required certifications must align with the specialty area, including but not limited to:
  • ARRT (R), (CT), (MR), (M), or (VI)
  • ARDMS or ARDCS for sonography and echocardiology specialties

Medical Imaging Supervisor Required Licensure/ Certificates (Tracks A and B, based on modality) :

Mammographers : Certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) (M) (R)

Echocardiology Technicians : Certified by the American Registry of Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographers (ARDCS) or American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARMDS) Certification

Computed Tomography Technologists : American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Certification (CT) (R)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists : American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Certification (MR) (R)

Interventional Radiologic Technologists : American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Certification (IV) (R)

Radiologic Technologist : American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT Certification ( R)

Ultrasonographer/Vascular : Certified by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS)

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Comprehensive knowledge of:

• Anatomy, physiology, physics and medical terminology as it relates to each imaging modality
• Exam specific requirements when imaging neonates, pediatric and adult patients
• Adherence to HIPAA regulations
• Documentation required for exam billing processes
• General imaging patient care practices/operations utilized in a hospital setting.
• Joint Commission requirements.

Skill in:

• Positioning patients for image acquisition.
• Shielding patients per ALARA.
• Recognizing and evaluating projected images for clarity, content and scope of examination.

Demonstrated ability to:

• Lead and train in several modalities.
• Assign and review staff work effectively.
• Perform routing and complex and/or specialty imaging services studies to include measurements of normal and abnormal pathology and detailed anatomical statistics.
• Proficiently perform exams requiring sterile field set-up and maintenance.
• Exercise a high degree of tact, courtesy, poise, sensitivity and respect when explaining procedures to patients.
• Provide clear and concise explanations to patients to reduce anxieties and obtain cooperation.
• Establish effective working relationships with patients, physicians, and staff.
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

ORAL EXAM - 100%: A job-related oral exam will be conducted to evaluate and compare participating applicants' knowledge, skills, and abilities in relation to those factors which job analysis has determined to be essential for successful performance of the job. Applicants must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.

Applicants successfully completing the exam process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.
