THE POSITIONLaborer *The current vacancy is in the Public Works Department, Environmental Programs and Operations Division.
This Laborer position is assigned to the Public Works Department, Environmental Programs and Operations Division. The following tasks are essential for the Laborer's assigned to work in the City’s Environmental Programs and Operations Division. Incumbents in this classification may not perform all these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.
- Under direct supervision, clean and maintain the Transfer Station facility, transfer station yard, and the adjacent roadways using brooms, shovels, and non-street legal facility sweepers.
- After training, inspects assigned work areas for potential safety hazards, maintenance needs, or operational concerns, and reports findings to supervision.
- After training, guides vehicle movement within the Transfer Station and assists Heavy Equipment Operators to maintain safe and efficient traffic flow.
- After training, performs daily refuse load checks to identify and remove non-approved or prohibited waste materials before process refuse.
- Cleans and washes Sanitation vehicles and equipment. Ensures safe storage and handling of cleaning materials.
- Under direct supervision, completes field debris or litter collection to ensure community safety and support emergency or storm debris removal operations.
- In accordance with established procedures and environmental standards, collects, transports, and disposes solid waste, recyclables, and bulky items.
- Operates light-duty trucks, small power tools, and cleaning equipment to maintain cleanliness of pedestrian containers and paved surfaces.
- Follows City safety policies, standard operating procedures (SOP’s), and OSHA/Cal-OSHA regulations, using required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: some experience in performing physically demanding work. Prior experience in sanitation, waste collection, or related maintenance work is desirable.
Licenses and Certificates: Valid California Class C driver license is required.
EXAMINATION PROCEDURESApplicants must receive a passing score on all examination components in order to be placed on the eligible list.
- Performance Test (weighted at 40%): To measure ability to perform semi-skilled tasks. (Tentatively scheduled for the week of July 20, 2026 and/or week of July 27, 2026).
- Oral Appraisal Interview (weighted at 60%): To evaluate training, experience and personal qualifications. (Tentatively scheduled for the week of August 3, 2026 and/or week of August 10, 2026).
