The PositionOPEN & PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION - SIX MONTHS PROBATIONARY PERIOD Job Description Classifications in this occupational series perform semi-skilled and skilled mechanical work involving the repair and maintenance of combustion gas turbine generating units, natural gas, landfill gas, and air compressor units, battery energy storage system (BESS) maintenance and associated accessories and auxiliary equipment.
This classification performs skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of equipment in reciprocating engines, gas turbine, landfill gas equipment and accessories.

Reporting Relationships This position reports to Power Plant Shift Supervisor

Minimum RequirementsThe following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
An equivalent combination of experience and education sufficient to perform the essential job functions and provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
Education High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience Two years of experience performing semi-skilled mechanical repair and maintenance work, including some experience in the maintenance and operation, or repair of turbines, reciprocating engines, and auxiliaries.
Transportation Valid Class C California driver's license

Hourly City employees may be considered, provided that they furnish proof of continuous employment immediately preceding the final filing date, which would equal a minimum of six months of full-time service or 1040 part-time hours. (Civil Service Rule VIII 4-E).

Working Conditions Work is performed indoors in shops or operating facilities or outside in a variety of field and weather conditions.
Work is performed on a 12-hour rotating shift basis, including nights and weekends.
Emergency response may be required 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, including nights, weekends and holidays.
Physical requirements include ability to:
- Work in a hot and noisy area.
- Work around and with oils and greases.
- Walk in a confined space.
- Lift tools and equipment of the trade up to fifty pounds for up to fifty feet.
Incumbents must
- Work independently and/or in a team setting.
- Comply with the National Standards Institute's requirements on practices for respiratory protection and hearing loss.

Successful completion of the Power Plant Mechanic Apprenticeship program may serve to meet the minimum requirements to become Power Plant Mechanic.

Selection ProcessEVALUATION OF APPLICATION: Submitted Application will be reviewed to ensure applicants meet the minimum requirements. Only the most qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process.
Candidates must pass each exam component with a minimum score of 70% in order to be placed on the eligible list.
ORAL INTERVIEW:(Weight of 100%) To evaluate the applicant's experience, education, and personal fitness for the position.
TIME AND PLACE OF THE EXAMINATION WILL BE ANNOUNCED. Evaluations will be based on the candidate's education and experience relevant to the position. Examinations will assess evaluate the candidate's education, experience, knowledge and skills related to the job. The City of Glendale reserves the right to modify the examination components or their weighting. If changes are necessary, candidates will be informed of the specific examination components and their weight before the examination is administered. The selected candidate will undergo a background check, including Livescan fingerprinting.
