JOB SUMMARYThe City of Manhattan Beach is actively seeking a Recreation Coordinator to fill a vacancy in the Community Programs Division of the Parks & Recreation Department. We are looking for a compassionate and energetic Recreation Coordinator to lead, design, and oversee engaging recreational, wellness, and educational programs for older adults. - Plans, implements and schedules programs, activities, and special events in assigned areas, including older adults, volunteers, and dial-a-ride transportation services and programs.
- Assists with part-time staff, contractor and volunteer recruitments, trainings, schedules and evaluations.
- Maintains statistical, attendance and program activity records.
- Prepares written and oral reports on assigned programs.
- Participates in, and administers, program budgets.
- Provides written input on budget development, including staffing, cost, and revenue estimates.
- Monitors expenditures as assigned.
- Assists with the development of promotional marketing materials; prepares and distributes publicity concerning new or ongoing recreation offerings.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES Education/Training/Experience: - Older Adults Division: Bachelor’s degree in recreation or related field with one year of experience planning, organizing, and conducting programs in areas of leisure, education, enrichment, and wellness for older adults in a community based Senior Center or similar setting. Two (2) years of full-time equivalent work experience can substitute for the Bachelor’s degree.
Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements: - Ability to attain a valid Class C California driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record.
- In accordance with California Government Code Section 3100, City of Manhattan Beach employees, in the event of a disaster, are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to protect the health, safety, lives, and property of the people of the State.
Knowledge of: Procedures and methods related to a variety of recreational, special events, older adult programs, cultural arts (which may include ceramics, visual arts, and/or performing arts), aquatics and recreational facilities maintenance and operations; safe operations of equipment and material for related divisions; basic principles and practices of recreation administration; recreational, cultural arts and social needs of the community; modern office practices, procedures, methods and equipment.
Ability to: Work effectively with a team of recreation professions in a professional setting; possess a community public service orientation and ability to provide outstanding programs and services in line with department and City mission and goals; understand community needs in a variety of recreation areas and evaluate activities according to those needs; keep organized files and maintain consistent records; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; follow directions from a supervisor; accept constructive criticism; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Part-time employees are enrolled in PARS (Public Alternate Retirement System). All part-time and seasonal employees contribute 7.5% each pay period on a pre-tax basis. If an employee reaches 1,000 hours within a fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th) or is already a CalPERS member, then they are enrolled in CalPERS (Public Employees Retirement System).
The City complies with California Labor Code 245-249 by providing paid sick leave for part-time hourly employees accordingly.
The City of Manhattan Beach does not provide medical/dental/vision benefits to part-time employees. Eligible employees enrolled in CalPERS may opt into a CalPERS medical plan.
