About the OpportunityThe City of Ventura Parks & Recreation Department is hiring a
Recreation Coordinator to join our team dedicated to enriching the quality of life through recreation, parks, and community partnerships. This position plans, coordinates, and oversees a variety of recreation, cultural, wellness, and community programs while supporting special events, community outreach, and partnerships.
The current vacancy is assigned to the Barranca Vista Center (BVC) , which serves children, youth, adults, seniors, and families through a range of recreational programs, classes, and activities. The Barranca Vista Center is the City's "Imagination Center," offering a welcoming space for creativity, learning, and community connection for all ages. The center features a large activity room and art studio and provides year-round classes in art, music, dance, fitness, and more!
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Coordinating recreation, educational, wellness, cultural, and community programs and special events.
- Planning, promoting, and evaluating assigned programs and services.
- Recruiting, training, scheduling, and supervising part-time staff, volunteers, and contract instructors.
- Building and maintaining partnerships with community organizations and stakeholders.
- Providing exceptional customer service and serving as a resource for participants and the public.
- Assisting with program budgets, purchasing, inventory, and grant administration, as assigned.
- Preparing reports, promotional materials, newsletters, and program communications.
- Coordinating facility use, rentals, and ensuring safe, effective operations of assigned facilities.
- Monitoring program effectiveness and recommending improvements to enhance services, meet community needs, and support continuous program development.
- Responding to incidents, maintaining program records, and ensuring facilities and equipment are safe, well-maintained, and ready for use.
- Representing the City by attending meetings, giving presentations, and serving as a liaison to community groups, boards, commissions, and partner organizations.
The Ideal Candidate - Preferred QualificationsThe ideal candidate is an organized, customer-focused professional who enjoys building relationships and creating meaningful recreational opportunities for the community. They are skilled at coordinating multiple projects, communicating with diverse audiences, and leading staff and volunteers. Experience planning community programs, managing events, developing partnerships, and providing outstanding public service will contribute to success in this position.
Minimum Qualifications - RequiredA combination of education, training and experience equivalent to completion of some college course work in a field related to public administration, recreation, cultural arts, or social services, and two years of progressively responsible experience implementing services in the social services, senior services, cultural arts, or recreation field; OR in lieu of college coursework, a total of three years of experience as described above.
Depending upon assignment, the ability to speak Spanish, in addition to English, is desirable .
License: Depending on assignment, possession of a valid California Class C driver's license may be required.

The Eligibility List The resulting eligibility list may be used to fill other Recreation Coordinator vacancies that may occur during the duration of the eligibility list. Qualifying candidates may be considered for future Recreation Coordinator vacancies. THE SCHEDULE The timeline dates are subject to change. - Department Selection Interviews will be scheduled promptly after the panel interviews have been completed. Qualifying candidates will be notified by phone or email if they are invited to the department interview process .
- August 2026 - Candidates will be notified of the outcome of the interview by this date.
