About This Position Job Description:Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
- Pick up litter and service restrooms.
- Perform grounds keeping and grounds maintenance tasks.
- Operate hand tools.
- Operate power tools.
- Assemble and dismantle portable stages and seating arrangements.
- Perform routine cleaning of facilities.
- Operates vehicles.
- Assist the public with questions/concerns.
- Assist with graffiti or paint removal.
Responsibilities - Supervision and/or Leadership Exercised:Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
- Knowledge of general grounds keeping processes, policies and procedures within the Parks and Recreation Department.
- Knowledge of equipment used in grounds keeping or other related work.
- Knowledge of minor construction.
- Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Skill in planning and organizing.
- Ability to operate power tools.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment or materials applicable to the assigned work.
- Ability to read and follow floor plan sketches and diagrams.
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public.
Minimum Qualifications:- Two (2) plus years of experience in the assigned area.
Licenses and Certifications Required:- Texas Class C Operator's License.
Preferred Experience:- Experience performing large-scale encampment abatement services in a park-like setting.
- Experience working with diverse populations, including individuals experiencing mental health and medical emergencies.
- Experience operating a truck and trailer while hauling large payloads.
- Experience performing detailed pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
- Experience utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when performing site inspections or clean-ups.
- Experience assessing and reporting condition of park or work area for items such as people experiencing homelessness (PEH) activity, cleanliness, damages, and/or safety issues.
Preferred Knowledge:- Knowledge of safety standards when performing encampment abatement.
- Basic computer competency to include opening and closing work orders on an iPad and using Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Teams, and Excel.
Other:- Ability to travel to more than one work location.

The purpose of the
Temporary - General Maintenance Worker II position is to conduct encampment abatement and communicate regularly with people experiencing homelessness (PEH) and the Homeless Strategy Office. This position will conduct routine park servicing and maintenance inspections in order to provide the Austin community with clean, safe, and well-maintained City of Austin park grounds.

- Driving Requirement: This position requires a valid Texas Class “C” Driver’s License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.
- Physical Requirements: Tasks may involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying, or using a force equal to lifting up to thirty-five (35) pounds. Work environment includes inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, and hazards associated with equipment operation including fumes, oils, gases, and mists. Tolerate loud noise associated with enthusiasm and excitement. Work outdoors in any and all types of weather and or inclement conditions; and in confined spaces at times. Must be physically and mentally able to communicate, respond, and work with participant’s needs and safety issues.

Salary:$24.52 per hour

Work Schedule:- Monday to Friday; 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
- Work schedule and location is subject to change based on department needs and programs.
- May be required to work during special events, evenings, and holidays.
- May be required to work during city emergencies such as extreme weather events.
