DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe, well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD seeks an
Inspector to join its
Greenspace Management/Quality Assurance team.
Provides routine and scheduled inspections within city parks to ensure safety and quality of work.
- Identifies and corrects safety hazards as needed to maintain safe park environments.
- Ensures parks meet all required safety and regulatory standards.
- Prepares, conducts, and schedules inspections of esplanades and parks.
- Verifies proper maintenance of irrigation systems and park amenities.
- Performs documentation and filing activities in common databases such as Mapper, Cityworks, and 3 1 1.
- Ensures contractor work performed within parks and esplanades adheres to all contractual requirements, safety standards, and contract compliance expectations.
- Maintains clear, concise, factual, and impartial communication when rendering judgment.
- May be required to work weekends and/or holidays based on operational needs.
- Performs other duties and activities as required during operations.
WORKING CONDITIONS The position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters or records boxes (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. There are routine discomforts from exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/ wetness and unpleasant air conditions. The position may involve routine exposure to soiled materials and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSMINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires a high school diploma/GED certificate and up to 18 months of education or training in the area of inspection to be performed.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Two years of journey level experience related to the area of inspection to be performed or required.
MINIMUM LICENSE REQUIREMENTS May require a valid Texas driver's license and comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).
PREFERENCESPreference will be given to candidates with:
Ground maintenance and previous supervisory experience. Also, candidates who served as a crew lead in the field. Prior park maintenance /inspections experience. CDL license and pesticide applicator's license are desirable but not required. Proficient in Outlook, Word, and Excel programs, and working an Android tablet to upload information/ photos in the field.
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.** GENERAL INFORMATION SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED The selection process will involve application review and/or interview.

Pay Grade 18
SALARY INFORMATION Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
