Description
Job SummaryMohave County Information Technology Department is looking to fill the position of Geographic Information System (GIS) Technician .Do you enjoy working with maps, technology, and data? Are you passionate about Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and want to help shape the future of Mohave County? Join our team as a GIS Technician! As a GIS Technician, you will help maintain the County's geographic information systems by creating and updating digital maps, managing spatial data, conducting research, and providing valuable information that supports County operations and public services.
The role primarily involves office-based tasks with occasional fieldwork. The typical working conditions include standard office hours with some flexibility for project deadlines. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. There may be occasional weekend or holiday work depending on project needs. Travel is not expected except for occasional trips to different locations in Mohave County.
What you'll do: Create, edit, and maintain GIS databases and digital maps
Produce cartographic products, reports, charts, and demographic data
Research and update land use, parcel, and geographic information
Work with ESRI ArcGIS software and GIS databases
Perform quality control and data validation
Provide outstanding customer service to County departments and the public
Participate in professional development to stay current with GIS technology
Minimum Qualifications:- High School Diploma or GED
- College coursework in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Engineering, Planning, or a related field
- One (1) year of experience with GIS, computerized mapping, surveying, field data collection, or related technical work
Preferred:Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Graphics, Computer Mapping, CAD, or a related field
Compensation Salary Range: Range 13/Steps 1-8 ($21.09-$25.93)

Essential Job Functions- Updates and maintains GIS databases and produces cartographic products; collects and maintains source data.
- Edits graphic and attribute components of geographic databases; edits tabular data using relational database tools.
- Performs automation of graphic data using digitizing or coordinate geometry techniques.
- Creates plot command files and uses existing plotting macros to produce cartographic products; produces edit plots for quality review of data.
- Writes basic documentation, recording procedures used in automating and editing data; records relevant notes pertaining to assignments.
- Responds to demographic information requests; researches, compiles, and performs calculations to produce data, reports or maps on a variety of historical and projected demographic information.
- Produces charts, graphics and spreadsheets displaying demographic and census data; assists with analysis and interpretation.
- Assists with updating land use studies using development data and photo interpretation techniques.
- Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
- Performs research of county records for pertinent data that needs to be entered in the County’s GIS.
- Participates in quality control checks of the database to determine data accuracy levels.
- Participates in filling map and digital data requests from the public and other departments.
- Assists in routine maintenance of GIS hardware and peripheral equipment.
- Attends seminars and educational opportunities to keep updated on modern procedures and equipment, including both hardware and software.
Minimum Qualifications- High School Diploma/GED (General Education Degree).
- College coursework in geography, GIS, Computer Science, planning, engineering, cadastral mapping or related field.
- One (1) year of technical experience involving geographical information system (GIS) operations, computerized mapping, field data collection, surveying, public interaction and personal computer operations.
- OR an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE - Bachelor’s Degree desirable with major course work in GIS, computer graphics, computer mapping or computer aided design (CAD)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Principles, practices and methods of Geographical Information System (GIS).
- ESRI family of products including ArcGIS desktop software (ArcView, ArcEditor and/or ArcInfo) 8.x or above.
- GIS database design, concepts, conventions and management used within a comprehensive GIS environment.
- GIS data conversion and maintenance.
- Principles, practices, and techniques of mapping and computer-aided design/drafting.
- Cartographic principles.
- Effectively reading and interpreting graphs, charts, diagrams, air photos and maps.
- Effectively utilizing digitizing, plotting and drafting techniques and procedures.
- Communicating and maintaining professionalism with the public, co-workers, and work contacts.
- Read and interpret survey notes, plan diagrams, specifications, legal descriptions, maps and other legal documents.
- Ability to apply fundamental mathematical knowledge to analyze methods and procedures accurately and logically.
- Identify, analyze and resolve problems applicable to GIS hardware and software.
- To research county records pertinent to a GIS database.
- Understand, interpret and apply pertinent federal, state, county, city, and departmental laws, rules, regulations, codes, standards, policies, procedures and directives encountered in the performance of assignments.
- Communicate ideas clearly, concisely and effectively, orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with GIS committee members, GIS users, other county departments and their employees, other agencies, and the general public.
- Work independently in completing assigned tasks and in maintaining records and other documentation accurately and legibly.

Out of Pocket Maximum includes medical Deductible, medical Copays, Prescription Drug Deductible and Copays. TELADOC Teladoc is a healthcare option available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, and 365 days per year for non-emergent medical conditions.
Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) This voluntary benefit is available to all regular employees working at least 30 hours per week. This pre-tax option will reduce taxable income.

Retirement Systems / Long-Term Disability Mohave County is a MANDATORY participating agency in these classification-based retirement systems:
- (ASRS) Arizona State Retirement System: Eligible employees working at least 20 hours per week for 20 weeks or more. MANDATORY contribution rate as of 07/01/2023 is 12.27% beginning on your first paycheck and is employer matched.
- (CORP) Correction Officers Retirement Plan: Employees in Adult Detention positions with the Sheriff's Office. Contributions begin 90 days after first day of employment. Election rates of contribution are between 5% - 40%; default rate of 7%.
