THE COMMUNITY 

Sunnyvale, Texas, is home to approximately 9,500 residents and covers 16 square miles on the eastern edge of Dallas County. TOWN GOVERNMENT  

A highly educated and fiscally conservative community, Sunnyvale operates under a home-rule charter with a council-manager form of government. The community’s Town Council consists of six members elected at large by place, and the mayor is elected at large. The mayor serves two-year terms, and council members serve three-year, staggered terms, all with no term limits. A professional Town Manager is appointed by the Town Council to manage day-to-day operations, overseeing staff and the organization’s budget.  

 

The Town has a total 25/26 fiscal year budget of $83,994,540 with a General Fund budget of $16,048,200 million. Services are provided by 108 full-time employees and 2 part-time employees. Sunnyvale’s ad valorem tax rate is $0.4530 per $100 of valuation. Significant projects recently completed or underway include the design and development of the animal shelter and the future town hall and police station, $20 million in street maintenance and reconstruction, a visioning process to create a downtown district, planning efforts for various capital improvement projects, and the creation of two tax increment reinvestment zones. 

 

THE POSITION 

Under general direction of the Town Manager, the Assistant Town Manager serves as a key member of the Town’s executive leadership team and assists in the administration and coordination of municipal operations, strategic initiatives, organizational development efforts, and Town Council priorities. The Assistant Town Manager provides leadership and oversight of assigned departments, programs, and special projects, with assignments determined based on organizational needs and the incumbent’s qualifications and expertise. The position supports long-range planning, fiscal management, capital improvement implementation, intergovernmental relations, economic development initiatives, and organizational performance and may serve as Acting Town Manager in the absence of the Town Manager.   

 

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished local government professional with a sophisticated understanding of municipal management, governance, public finance, organizational development, and strategic planning. The successful candidate will possess the ability to connect day-to-day operations with long-term community goals. They will work closely with the Town Manager to ensure that policy decisions and financial resources are aligned and will understand the distinct roles of elected officials, the Town Manager, and professional staff. They will bring a strong understanding of governance, best practices, and continuous improvement initiatives. Most importantly, the successful candidate will bring the intellectual curiosity, professional maturity, and leadership presence necessary to help strengthen the organization. 

 

SALARY & BENEFITS 

The salary range for the Assistant Town Manager position is $150,000 to $190,000 (+ /-DOQ) with placement in the range dependent upon qualifications. In addition, an excellent benefit package and a flexible work schedule are to be defined in the successful candidate’s employment contract with the Town. Key benefits include retirement provided by the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) with a 7% employee contribution matched 2:1 by the Town. In addition, there are 457 and Roth retirement options and employees participate in Social Security.
