Description
The City of Burlingame is accepting applications for the position of Facilities Maintenance Worker (Casual/ Temporary/Part-Time). Under close supervision, the Facilities Maintenance Worker performs skilled work in a variety of trades involving the maintenance and repair of City-owned buildings. Incumbents work both independently and as part of a team.
This is a casual, part-time, temporary position. Work schedules and hours are based on the operational needs of the Facilities Division and may vary.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES (Responsibilities including but not limited to)
- Plumbing (repair/replace mixing valves and stems, plunge toilets and use power augers)
- Carpentry (constructing shelves, hanging a door)
- Electrical (replacing a switch and/or receptacle, changing out a ballast, replacing light bulbs)
- Painting (replacing a section of drywall, patching a hole, taping, priming, finish work)
- Skilled work in HVAC (changing filters, changing belts, temperature readings, troubleshooting controls and components)
Ideal CandidateESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Basic building maintenance methods, tools, and equipment; safe work practices; and the proper use of hand and power tools.
Ability to: Work effectively both independently and as part of a team; maintain accurate work logs and records; climb ladders; safely and skillfully operate required tools and equipment; and follow oral and written instructions.
Skills: Safely operate a variety of power tools, including saws, sanders, pressure washers, mixers, drills, and grinders.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the job is qualifying. Typically, this includes two (2) years of experience performing general building maintenance work, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and painting, as well as the ability to read and follow detailed instructions.
License/Certificate: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
BenefitsPaid Sick Leave: In accordance with the California Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act (effective January 1, 2024), employees accrue one (1) hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. Accrued sick leave may be used after 90 days of employment. Employees may use up to 40 hours of paid sick leave during a one-year period. Unused sick leave has no cash value.
Vacation: Part-time casual employees who work 30 or more days within one year of their hire date accrue vacation at the rate of one (1) hour for every 52 hours worked, up to a maximum of 16 hours per year. Employees may not accrue more than two years' worth of vacation at any one time.
Additional Information: No other benefits are provided. This is an at-will, casual position and is not part of the City's Civil Service System. Work hours are based on operational needs, there is no guarantee of hours, and employment may end at any time.

PRIOR TO APPOINTMENT Candidates selected for appointment will be required to:
- Successfully pass a fingerprint-based background check through the California Department of Justice.
- Comply with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 by providing proof of identity and authorization to work in the United States at the time of hire.
- Provide an official DMV driving record.
Candidates must have an acceptable driving record, defined as:
Within the past five (5) years: - No more than three (3) moving violations.
- No outstanding warrants for failure to appear.
Within the past seven (7) years: - No convictions for reckless driving.
- No convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Applicants with six (6) or more DMV points within the previous three (3) years will be considered to have an unacceptable driving record and will be disqualified from the recruitment process.
