This position may require on call.Typical DutiesMaintains the safety and physical security of the Jail facilityResponds to and manages emergency or crisis situations, using communication skills to resolve volatile situationsResponds to and manages life-threatening, potential life-threatening and hazardous situationsManages housing units of up to 144 occupantsControls, supervises and documents the movement and activities of inmatesConducts inspections, searches (including pat-downs and strip searches) and security checks of inmate housing areasAdministers first aid including exposure to blood and bio-hazardous materialsMaintains detention recordsPerforms routine receptionist and clerical dutiesWorks with detention statistics and computer dataSupervises the activities of visitors, support personnel and program volunteersConducts inventories of detention supplies and commoditiesDistributes and collects all incoming and outgoing mailAssists in securing firearms and ammunition in the gun lockerConducts manual and automated criminal history checksExamines and interprets court orders and release documents to determine correct court, housing needs and releasesAppears in court and/or hearings as a witnessAssists with the jail facility's level of cleanliness per standardsEssential Functions of this PositionDriving; standing and walking to work within jail population on different levels; climbing stairs; working with and around other detention staff, administrative staff, inmates and the public; dealing with interruptions; vision-acuity-near, needed for facility safety, computers, equipment, etc; hearing-ordinary conversation, speech-ordinary conversation, loud talking, and touch-finger dexterity needed for facility safety, computers, live scan, equipment, inmates, citizens, alarms, radio equipment and overhead paging, etc. Exposure to noise from inmates, citizens, other employees, alarms, paging system, etc., and exposure to odors such as pest control, kitchen, cleaning supplies, etc.Minimum QualificationsMust be a U.S. citizen or resident alien.Must be 18 years of age at time of appointment to the position.Must reside within Coconino County upon appointment to the position.Must be a high school graduate or possess a G.E.D.Additional RequirementsMust obtain an Arizona driver's license upon appointment to the position and maintain it throughout employment.Must successfully pass a written examination, interview board and physical agility test.Must successfully complete background check, polygraph examination, medical examination and drug test prior to employment.Must not have a felony conviction within the last ten years or dishonorable discharge from the military.Must not have a misdemeanor conviction involving domestic violence within previous five years.Must not have used marijuana within twelve months of hire or dangerous / narcotic drugs in the past five years for more than experimentation.Must successfully complete a minimum of 240 hours of correctional training within twelve months of employment.This position is non-exempt from overtime.This position is safety sensitive.Knowledge, Skills And AbilitiesWorking knowledge of: Report preparation and record keeping; Standard housekeeping practices; Human behavior and various social, economic and cultural backgrounds; Search and restraint procedures; Cash handling procedures; Security systems and procedures; Detention facility operational policies and procedures; Judicial system; Escalation and de-escalation of force.Some knowledge of: Practices and procedures as applied to a detention facility; Basic bookkeeping; Maintaining records and reports; Supervising the activities of others; Use of computers and word processing software; English grammar, spelling and arithmetic; Defensive tactics, self- defense.Ability to: Analyze situations, detect problems and facts; Maintain the safety and security of assigned housing units and 144 occupants; Deal impartially with individuals of various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds; Maintain a neutral attitude toward all inmates regardless of the reason for their detention; Respond to emergencies or stressful situations calmly, quickly and decisively; Work rotating shifts; Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public; Follow written and verbal instructions; Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.Employee BenefitsCoconino County offers a comprehensive employee benefits package to regular employees working 30 or more hours per week that includes (Regular Part Time employees receive some benefits on a pro-rated basis.
