Our 911 Dispatch Communications Officers play a vital role in providing swift and decisive emergency response by being the first point of contact, responding to critical incidents by gathering essential information from callers, and dispatching the appropriate assistance to the scene. The 911 Communications Officer operates a multiple line computerized telephone system, receiving calls for emergency services and general assistance. Receives and broadcasts messages, instructions, and information to emergency response personnel over a computerized radio system. Operate the state and federal computer system, accessing and inputting information. Operates a computer aided dispatch system that creates calls for service and tracks all officer activity. Operates a computerized mapping system.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Answers incoming telephone calls, obtains pertinent information, prioritizes calls and disseminates information.
  • Read a map and relay accurate directions.
  • Assists public with directions upon request.
  • Determines appropriate type and number of personnel needed and dispatches it to accidents, crime scenes, and other critical incidents.
  • Remain calm, think clearly and react quickly in emergency non-emergency situations.
  • Perform various tasks simultaneously.
  • Operates several computer systems to facilitate exchange of information.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with other employees and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with other agencies and the general public.
  • Follow directives.
  • Obtain sufficient information from callers, and initiate accurate reports.
  • Make sound decisions and work without direct supervision.
  • Maintain a computer logs of all information received and broadcast to include times, assigned officers, nature of complaint, case numbers, etc.
  • Deals tactfully with persons who are in stressful situations.
  • Maintains knowledge of Federal communications Commission's rules and regulations.
  • Monitor alarm systems that indicate location of fire, burglary, or other emergency situations, and reacting immediately to ensure proper response.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Accurate keyboarding skills.
  • Three or more years work experience of similar nature and scope of responsibility.
  • Experience in computers and Windows applications.
  • Pass a background investigation conducted by the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office
  • Pass pre-employment medical physical and drug testing requirements.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Be NCIC & CJIS certified
  • Have prior experience or training in law enforcement dispatching.
  • Knowledge of civil and criminal law.
  • Ability to read maps.
  • Relay accurate directions.
  • Ability to perform various tasks simultaneously.
  • Be tactful with respect for the rights of others.
  • Have excellent hearing and verbal communications skills.
  • Must be able to function under stressful conditions.
  • Have extensive experience working with computers.
  • Must be able to follow directives.
  • Have good written communications skills.
  • Learn to operate radio communications equipment.
  • Make sound decisions and work without direct supervision.
