What You'll Do:
- Reviews and issues excavation, street plate, and track access permits.
- Inspects utility and contractor work within the public right-of-way to ensure compliance with City standards and approved permit conditions.
- Monitors excavation, restoration, traffic control, and site safety activities to protect the public and City infrastructure.
- Ensures work zones are maintained in a safe condition for motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, and nearby residents.
- Coordinates with utility companies, contractors, railroad representatives, City departments, and the public regarding permitted work activities.
- Investigates and addresses permit violations, safety concerns, and restoration deficiencies.
- Documents inspection activities and prepares reports, correspondence, and project records.
- Responds to citizen inquiries and concerns regarding construction activities, street closures, and right-of-way impacts.
- Conducts follow-up and warranty inspections to verify proper restoration of streets, sidewalks, and other public infrastructure.
Qualifications
REQUIRES
- High school graduation AND
- five (5) years of related and increasingly responsible experience in engineering, drawing, mapping, automated mapping, geographical information systems (GIS) and equipment, computer aided drafting and design (CADD), engineering, land survey, construction inspection and related fields OR
- High school graduation AND
- Two (2) years of experience at the level of Engineering Technician and possession of one of the two certifications:
- Level II Engineering Technology Certification in any Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical discipline as issued by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET)
- "Land Surveyor in Training" as issued by the Missouri Board of Architects, Professional Engineers, Professional Land Surveyors, and Professional Landscape Architects
- Class B Wastewater Collections System Certification from the Missouri Water Environmental Association OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to pass a background check, preemployment drug screen, and physical examination as prescribed by the City
- Must possess a valid State-issued driver's license in accordance with the City of KCMO Policies

The minimum education requirement for positions that allow for experience equivalency for an accredited degree is a high school diploma. For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained. Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.
If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
