Position Description

THE POSITION
The City of Fresno is recruiting for a Body and Fender Repairer responsible for performing modifications and repairs on buses, automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, and other City-owned vehicles and equipment.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Performs automotive body and fender repair and modification work on a variety of City owned vehicles and equipment.
- Sands, putties, applies primer and paints repaired surfaces, and aligns and straightens body panels.
- Uses welding tools, equipment and techniques to perform repair of damaged vehicles, equipment and related components.
- Cuts and installs automotive glass.
- Repairs and recovers seats and upholstery.
- Reads and interprets technical documents related to body and fender repair.
- Maintains a clean work area and assists with cleaning of shop areas and equipment. Performs related duties as required.
Body and Fender Repairer I is the entry level class in the Body and Fender Repairer series. Incumbents perform body and fender repair and modification work on City owned buses, automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, and other vehicles and equipment. This class is distinguished from Body and Fender Repairer II in that the latter is the journey level class in which incumbents perform the full range of duties with a minimum of supervision.

One (1) vacancy exists in the FAX Maintenance Division of the Department of Transportation. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of six (6) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.
Requirements
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination.
Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent GED Completion;
AND
One (1) year of full-time paid experience in minor body and fender repair work on automotive or related equipment.;
OR
Certification in the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR) Pro Level 1 in both:
- Refinish Technician
- Non-Structural Technician
Special Requirement(s) :
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License is required at the time of application and continued maintenance throughout the entire term of employment in this classification.
Within thirty (30) days of appointment must obtain a valid Commercial Instructional permit.
Within twelve (12) months of appointment must obtain and maintain throughout the entire term of employment in this classification:
• A valid Commercial Class B California Driver’s License with required endorsements and without air brake restriction.
• The following two (2) valid National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in the Collision Repair & Refinish (B) Series:
- Painting & Refinishing (B2)
- Non-Structural Analysis & Damage Repair (B3)
Incumbents must take the two above certification examinations within the first six (6) months of appointment. Failure to obtain the ASE certifications within twelve (12) months of appointment will be cause for termination from this classification.
This class is in a flexibly staffed series, which requires twelve (12) months of satisfactory service within the series. A Body & Fender Repairer I may be “flexed” to Body & Fender Repairer II as early as six (6) months upon recommendation of the appointing authority and upon possession of all necessary licenses and certificates. A Body & Fender Repairer I who “flexes” early must still serve the remainder of their probationary period at the II level, for a total of twelve (12) months. If an employee is hired at the II level, they will be required to serve the twelve (12) months probationary period at that level.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that are necessary to safely, effectively, and efficiently perform the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodation.
This classification’s physical demands involve heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally with assistance, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical demands may be required: balancing, climbing, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, walking.
Possess a valid California Driver's License at time of appointment. Candidates considered for hire must provide proof of a valid driver's license and current copy of their driving record.
The selected eligible candidates certified will be required to successfully pass a Department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint process prior to employment with the City of Fresno.
These positions have been designated as being 'safety sensitive' and require all eligibles offered employment to successfully pass a drug test prior to employment. Federal law requires that applicants for positions involving the operation of certain transit vehicles, revenue service vehicles, the transportation of hazardous materials, or heavy equipment over 26,001 pounds requiring a commercial driver's license, must undergo pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment. This classification is subject to random drug and alcohol testing throughout entire term of employment in this class.
Selection Process
The examination process may consist of the following:
APPLICATION REVIEW - Qualifying Only: Applications submitted will be reviewed and a limited number of the most qualified candidates may be invited to the panel interview. The selection will be based upon those applications and resumes which demonstrate the greatest breadth and depth of applicable education, experience, skills and training. Therefore, applicants are urged to submit sufficiently detailed information in their application materials for a proper evaluation.
The examination process may consist of the following:
WRITTEN EXAMINATION: 100%: A job-related written examination will be administered which may test a candidate's knowledge in the following areas: arithmetic, welding, knowledge of auto body work, mechanical tool identification, reading comprehension, blueprint or diagram reading/interpretation, occupational safety, and interpersonal skills. Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list.
The Written Exam is tentatively scheduled for the week of August 31, 2026.

HEALTH REIMBURSEMENT ARRANGEMENT (HRA)
Eligible retirees can use the remaining Sick Leave balance, in excess of 240 hours, at 80% of hourly rate and other qualified leave balances, tax free, to reimburse health insurance premiums and other qualified medical expenses.
RETIREMENT - City of Fresno Retirement Systems, one of the best funded public systems in the state. Reciprocity with other public California systems. Vested in Retirement benefits after 5 years of service. City employees do not participate in Social Security.
DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program): an optional, voluntary program that allows an employee to deposit retirement benefits in a special savings account within the Retirement System while continuing to work for the City of Fresno for up to 10 years. Participation minimum is age 50 and vested. Benefits include ownership of accumulated funds, compound interest earnings, and alternative distribution options.

The City Manager, who is appointed by the Mayor, is responsible for appointing all other department heads in the City.
