Detention Center Correctional Officer (Class II) Sumter County is Seeking a Detention Center Correctional Officer (Class II)Starting Salary: $45,000Position Overview Maintains safety and security within the detention center by supervising inmates, conducting booking and release procedures, and ensuring compliance with facility rules and regulations. Supports daily operations, monitors inmate activity, and protects the welfare of staff, inmates, and the public.EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED Inmate Intake & ReleaseProcesses inmate intake, including identification, fingerprinting, classification, and documentationConducts background and medical screenings and inventories personal propertyCompletes inmate release procedures in accordance with established protocolsSecurity & Facility Operations Patrols the detention facility and conducts regular headcountsSearches inmates and housing areas for contrabandMonitors surveillance systems, radios, and facility access pointsResponds to emergencies and incidents to ensure safety and controlInmate Supervision & Care Supervises inmate movement, housing assignments, and daily activitiesEnforces rules, regulations, and behavioral expectationsEnsures inmates receive meals, medical attention, and access to hygiene suppliesAddresses inmate concerns, complaints, and inquiriesTransportation & Support Transports inmates within the facility and to external locations (court, medical, work assignments)Assists with specialized programs such as work release or house arrestSupports courtroom security and population management effortsReporting & Documentation Maintains accurate records including booking logs, incident reports, and daily activity logsPrepares and submits reports in compliance with policies and proceduresTraining & Equipment Attends required training and maintains certificationsOperates equipment including firearms, restraint devices, communication systems, and vehiclesInspects equipment to ensure proper working condition and safetyAdditional Duties Assists with facility operations such as laundry, mail distribution, and supply managementProvides first aid/CPR when necessaryPerforms other related duties as assignedREQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES Knowledge of detention center operations, security procedures, and inmate supervision practicesUnderstanding of applicable laws, regulations, and inmate rightsAbility to remain calm and make sound decisions in high-stress or emergency situationsStrong observation, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skillsAbility to communicate effectively with diverse populations, including inmates, staff, and the publicAbility to prepare clear and accurate reportsStrong organizational and time management skillsAbility to work collaboratively with law enforcement, legal professionals, and medical personnelMINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE High school diploma or GED requiredOne (1) to two (2) years of experience in corrections, security, or law enforcement preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experienceMust successfully complete required training through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy and obtain certification(s)SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Must be at least 18 years of ageMust possess a valid South Carolina driver's licenseMust pass background investigation, drug screening, and physical evaluationMust maintain required certifications, including firearms qualificationPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to stand and walk for extended periodsAbility to lift, carry, and restrain individuals of varying weightsAbility to run, climb, bend, and respond quickly in emergency situationsAbility to exert up to 30 pounds of force regularlyMust be physically capable of self-defense and maintaining control in confrontational situationsWORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed in a secure detention facility with potential exposure to physical risk and stressful situationsMay require shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidaysRegular interaction with inmates, law enforcement personnel, and the publicBENEFITS Sumter County offers a competitive benefits package designed to support employees and their families:Comprehensive medical, dental, and life insurance coverageParticipation in the State Law Enforcement Retirement System (eligible after 28 years of service)Optional 401(k) retirement savings planPaid time off , including:80 hours of annual leaveAccrued sick leaveTwo (2) personal daysBirthday leaveThree (3) days of bereavement leaveHoliday payWorkers' compensation coverageOpportunities for overtime pay, as neededAccess to a Homebuyers' Assistance ProgramWork Schedule Must be willing and able to work weekends, holidays, extended hours, and be available during emergencies and natural disasters.For additional information, contact: Lt.
