About the General Services Department

The General Services Department (GSD) is the operational backbone of our city's infrastructure. We provide strategic oversight, asset management, and technological innovation across seven core divisions. Our team ensures that city government operates safely, efficiently, and sustainably every day.

• City Architect: Responsible for structural design and planning, modernizing civic spaces and preserving historical landmarks.
• Fleet Services: Responsible for vehicle lifecycle management and maintenance. Fleet sustains public safety, emergency and municipal operations.
• Facilities & Security: Responsible for safe, functional city operations and the protection of public, employees and community visitors daily.
• Information Technology: Responsible for digital infrastructure, cyber security and tech support. IT connects municipal networks and powers public digital services.
• Procurement: Responsible for maximizing taxpayer dollars through fair vendor bidding and strategic purchasing and contract management.
• Records Management: Responsible for data compliance, retention and archiving. Safeguarding institutional knowledge and public transparency.
• Real Estate: Property acquisition, leasing and management. Secures strategic land for parks, housing and infrastructure. Optimizing the City's portfolio and public-private land partnerships.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do

• Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot IP-based surveillance camera systems and related infrastructure.
• Deploy and support communication cabinets, network switches, wireless radios, antennas, power systems, and fiber optic connectivity.
• Install and maintain equipment on buildings, poles, rooftops, and other elevated locations.
• Terminate, test, label, and troubleshoot copper and fiber optic cabling.
• Diagnose and resolve issues involving cameras, network equipment, wireless systems, power sources, and communications infrastructure.
• Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, and system performance testing.
• Maintain accurate documentation, including device inventories, configurations, network diagrams, and installation records.
• Coordinate with internal departments, vendors, contractors, and public safety personnel to support projects and service requests.
• Follow all applicable safety procedures when working around electrical equipment, roadways, aerial lifts, and active job sites.

Qualifications

REQUIRES

• Accredited Bachelor's degree and 3 years of technology experience OR an equivalent combination of qualifying education and technology experience.

Positions requiring a high school diploma/GED certificate must be obtained from a school/program accredited by the Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

The minimum education requirement for positions that allow for experience equivalency for an accredited degree is a high school diploma. Unless otherwise specified, an accredited degree must be obtained from a college or university listed with the U.S. Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.
For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained.
Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.

If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
