The Recreation Leader position is part-time, and depending upon the position, can require up to 25 hours per week of work. The Recreation Leader position is year-round and will work special events and some weekends. The mandatory special events all staff are required to work include: Village Venture; Halloween Spooktacular - Saturday before Halloween; Holiday Promenade - First Friday in December; Spring Celebration - Saturday before Easter; 4th of July Celebration - July 4. In addition, Recreation Leaders may be called upon to work for other program areas within the Recreation and Human Services Department.

The Position

Youth Programs

The Youth Programs Division operates the TRACKS Activity Center (TAC) and Youth Activity Center (YAC) during the school year, and Camp Claremont during a 6-week summer program. The TAC is the junior high after-school program and the YAC is the high-school after-school program, while Camp Claremont is grades 1st - 7th.

• Hours: The TAC and YAC hours are immediately after school until 6:00 pm. Camp Claremont 8-week summer program hours are from 8:00 am - 1:00 pm, Monday-Friday.
• Duties: Each of the three programs consists of supervising 100 - 200 participants a day, while working with a team of staff members to create and implement daily activities. This individual's duties will consist of supervising, mentoring, and keeping the participants safe and engaged while in the program. This individual may be responsible for answering phones and taking messages, having direct contact with students and parents, cash handling/food prep/restocking and taking inventory, planning and implementing daily activities, and overseeing the volunteer program. He/she will be a part of the front line staff and have the most interaction with the youth participants daily, making sure participants are engaged, happy, and safe, feel welcomed, and are aware of all the resources offered through Youth Programs and the community.

Community Center Front Counter, Wading Pool Operations, & Facility Reservations

The Alexander Hughes Community Center is the "Hub" of community recreation and information. The Community Center offers a variety of services, which include recreation classes and facility room rentals.

• Hours: The Hughes Center is open 9:00 am - 9:00 pm Monday - Thursday, 9:00 am - 6:00 pm Fridays, and 9:00 am - 2:00 pm Saturdays. Shifts outside of the hours may be scheduled to accommodate facility rentals. The Front Counter shifts generally range from 8:30 am - 9:30 pm Monday - Thursday, 8:30 am - 6:30 pm Fridays, and 8:30 am - 2:30 pm Saturdays. Additional shifts may be scheduled outside of regular hours to accommodate facility rentals.
• Duties: In support of services offered at the Community Center, the Recreation Leader will provide clerical and receptionist duties, set up and tear down for facility rentals, and assist with projects as assigned. Clerical and receptionist duties include answering phone calls and taking messages, assisting the public with inquiries, handling cash, and program registration. Set up and tear down of facility room rentals includes moving tables and chairs, and setting up audio-visual equipment. Examples of projects as assigned include developing marketing materials for the City’s Activity Guide and assisting with park picnic reservation postings.

Senior Programs

The Claremont Senior Program consists of two community centers (Joslyn Center and Blaisdell Community Center) which serve adults 55+. In addition to offering a daily hot lunch program, the program provides a diverse array of opportunities for older adults to socialize, stay active, and connect with others with similar interests.

• Hours: Claremont Senior Program shifts generally range from Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
• Duties: Recreation Leader provides support for the Joslyn Center front desk. Duties include clerical tasks, room setups, and providing customer service

Ideal Candidate

Education: Completion of the 12th grade, or equivalent.

Experience: E xperience working with the public.

Licenses and Certifications:

• Due to the performance of field duties which will require operation of a motor vehicle, a valid California Class C Driver's License and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment are required. Employees must maintain a current license and acceptable driving record throughout the term of employment.
  
• Must be able to earn a certification in CPR and First Aid during a City-provided training course.

• Bilingual skills.

• Ability to multi-task with a sense of urgency.
• Previous experience working with young people, while also having the ability to speak with adults, parents, and dignitaries.
• Lifeguarding or aquatics experience.
• Experience working with older adults.
• Summer camp counselor or early childhood experience

Physical Abilities:

• Operate computer, telephone, portable radio, security systems, audio and visual equipment, and other common office equipment.
• Understand and respond to the public and staff requests for assistance on the computer, phone, and in person.
• Administer basic first aid as directed.
• Arrive to work on time.
• Follow directions from a supervisor.
• Plan and organize recreational programs.
• Count money.
• Sit, stand, stoop, or bend for up to four hours at a time.
• Lift up to 60 pounds.
• Effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
• Travel from one location to another, in the course of doing business.
