Job Description
Under limited supervision of the Shift Lieutenant, the Shift Sergeant provides direct and indirect supervision of all Officers assigned to the shift. Assumes responsibility of all assigned areas of the shift. Conducts inspections/tours of all areas at least twice during the shift and documents according to procedures. Maintains an open line of communication with all officers assigned to the shift. Keeps them abreast of any/all changes affecting duty. Maintains an open-door policy for communication flow. Remains alert for violations in security, safety, and sanitation. Initiates immediate corrective action for identified discrepancies. Remains knowledgeable of all post orders and emergency plans and procedures. Ensures all reports are accurate and submitted in a timely manner. Assists the Shift Lieutenant with other related duties such as leave and attendance, EPMS, disciplinary, SMU processing, etc. Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
- A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
- A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for 1/2 of required experience.
- Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
