Responsibilities
Kansas City Public Works is seeking a strategic Deputy Director of Operations to lead Street Operations and serve on the department's executive leadership team. Reporting to the Director of Public Works, this role assumes Director duties in their absence and drives operational excellence across street infrastructure maintenance, snow and ice control, safety, and performance management.
What You'll Do
- Assist with the operations budget, departmental policy development, and long-range strategic planning.
- Provide executive oversight of street infrastructure maintenance, repair, and preservation programs.
- Lead citywide snow and ice control readiness and response efforts.
- Oversee safety initiatives and training programs to reduce incidents and promote a safety-first culture.
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) across divisions to drive accountability and continuous improvement.
- Guide divisions in improving 311 service responsiveness.
- Represent the department before City Council, community groups, and residents.
- Collaborate with Fleet Management on preventive maintenance and fleet replacement planning.
- Partner with Asset Management to advance technology and support data-driven operations.
Qualifications
REQUIRES
- An accredited Bachelor's degree with major course work in engineering, business or public administration, or another appropriate discipline, and seven (7) years of experience in varied public or private sector programs, including three (3) years of progressively responsible supervisory experience, preferably supervising supervisory-level staff; OR an equivalent combination of qualifying education and experience.

For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained.
Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.
If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
