Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Specialized technical work operating the Police Department’s indoor firearms range and armory and accounting for weapons and ammunition, and training personnel and community members in the safe use of firearms.

This a a classified position covered by the Personnel Rules and a Management Category IV position which includes five (5) additional Management Vacation Days and a Vehicle Allowance of $120/month.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation. • Manage inventory, ordering, and storage of ammunition and related supplies for the armory and range.
• Maintain, inspect, repair and modify city-owned weapons.
• Maintain the armory and range and ensure compliance with all applicable safety rules and procedures.
• Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of firearms, supplies, and training.
• Prepare recommendations for supplies and equipment.
• Enforce rules and regulations.
• Prepare comprehensive lesson plans that meet established state and national standards.
• Issue ammunition to departmental personnel as needed.
• Train personnel in the safe and efficient use of firearms.
• Provide firearm safety courses for community members.
• Coordinate all training facility scheduling and use with outside agencies and vendors.
• Performs related work as required

JOB REQUIREMENTS, PREFERENCES & WORK ENVIRONMENT

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS High School diploma or a G.E.D. equivalency, supplemented by considerable experience in firearms operation instruction; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.Valid State of Florida driver's license.Candidates will be required to pass a background investigation, which includes a polygraph examination, prior to employment. If claiming Veterans’ Preference, you must attach a copy of the DD214 Member 4 form (or other supporting claim documents) to your on-line application.
Preferences
FDLE General Instructor Techniques or equivalent certificate is desirable but not required.Certified Armorer for departmentally approved handguns and rifles (Glock, Staccato, Cobalt Kinetics AR15) Certified in non-lethal Simunition training. As public servants, employees may be required to work immediately before, during, and/or after an emergency. All employees must be available and able to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Heads.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
This is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires the ability to balance, climb, crawl, crouch, kneel, lift and/or carry and push/pull various objects.
