JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Fire Protection Coordinator is responsible for managing and inspecting activities performed by contractors within SAWS facilities. The incumbent ensures contractor compliance with approved plans, specifications, construction standards, and federal, state, and local codes, laws, and regulations. The Senior Fire Protection Coordinator represents SAWS in a decision-making capacity and payment authorizing capacity when dealing with customers, contractors, consultants, developers, governmental and regulatory agencies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Manages, inspects, and accepts contractor activities and materials for compliance with governmental safety, regulatory compliance (National Fire Protection Association), approved plans (Engineering), specifications, construction standards, permits, and enforces contractor and SAWS’ quality control plans.
• Supervises, mentors, and evaluates the Fire Protection Coordinator.
• Resolves and addresses issues at facilities to include managing, inspecting, and accepting contractor repairs and emergency calls.
• Creates scopes of work for projects, assist in the bidding process, and works closely with the contracting and purchasing department to ensure that all work is completed.
• Schedules all fire inspections and contractor activities to ensure that all facilities are in compliance with all Federal, State, and City codes.
• Manages and conducts internal inspections of existing fire sprinkler systems to identify issues or necessary upgrades.
• Performs routine maintenance checks and troubleshoot any problems with fire sprinkler systems.
• Calculates, tabulates, and authorizes payments to contractors, including accurate accounting of material quantities and measurements in both standard and metric formats.
• Reads and interprets facility plans, specifications, and Fire life safety plans/Schematics, and approves/recommends additions or deletions.
• Maintains all facility fire life safety mark-up drawings to reflect as-built conditions and review contractor’s red-lined and as-built drawings.
• Maintains all fire inspection documentation for each facility to ensure that Bexar County and the City of San Antonio Fire Marshall’s office can receive any documentation needed on an on demand request.
• Provides technical assistance to fire alarm, detection and sprinkler system designers, fire alarm, detection and sprinkler system contractors, architects, and engineers.
• Reviews, plans, and attends pre-bid, pre-construction, and project status meetings with governmental agencies, contractors, and consultants affiliated with facilities.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

DECISION MAKING

• This position works under limited supervision.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Associates degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Management, Contracts or related field from an institution accredited by a recognized accrediting agency.
• Two years’ progressive experience in the maintenance, technical aspects of interpreting project plans and specificationsof Fire and Life Safety systems with a strong emphasis on records management and regulatory rules and regulations.
• International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector I and II Certifications within 12 months of hire.
• Confined Space Entry, Competent Person Excavation Safety, Work Zone Traffic Control, and Hazardous Materials Certification within one (1) year of hire.
• Valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s License.
• Ability to report to work on time, maintain a good attendance record, and work all designated work schedules.

PREFERRED

• Basic knowledge of fire alarms, sprinkler systems, and fire extinguishers.

JOB DIMENSIONS

• Skill in utilizing a personal computer and proficient in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation and project management software, and work order system.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to operate and maintain various types of equipment, machinery and tools to ensure safe working conditions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, internal and external customers, contractor representatives, and governmental agencies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical requirements include lifting up to 75 pounds occasionally. Subject to standing, sitting, walking, climbing, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling, and working in cramped and strained positions for periods of time to perform job scope.
Working conditions may be outside with frequent exposure to inclement weather; wastewater; mechanical, electrical, chemical and confined space hazards; offensive fumes; excessive noise; heavy traffic; deep excavations and animals, snakes and poisonous insects. May also include extreme heights and or high air and water pressure environments.
May be required to work hours other than regular daytime schedule such as nights, weekends, holidays, on-call or rotating shifts
