The Job

San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is recruiting for Full-Time Polygraph Examiners who administer polygraph examinations for the Specialized Investigations Division. Responsibilities include administering criminal, pre-employment and administrative polygraph examinations; recording, interpreting and analyzing responses; preparing written reports; and conducting background investigations.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

1) Background: Prior to appointment, applicants will be fingerprinted and must pass an extensive background investigation, including a polygraph examination. Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony.

2) Availability: Incumbents work primarily a day shift; may be required to work on-call and occasionally evenings or weekends.

3) Travel: Travel throughout the County may be required and employees will be required to make provisions for such transportation.

4) Training: Must complete a minimum of thirty-two (32) hours of AAPP, APA, CAPE or NPA polygraph related training every two (2) years. Membership in AAPP, APA, CAPE and/or NPA is required upon completion of probation.

Minimum Requirements

Certificate: Must possess a current certificate from an American Polygraph Association (APA) accredited Polygraph Examiners Course.

In addition to the Polygraph Examiner Certificate, candidates MUST meet one of the following experience options:

Option A: One (1) year of full-time equivalent experience administering polygraph examinations.

Option B: Three (3) years of experience in a law enforcement environment which includes experience conducting interviews and/or interrogations.

Substitution: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Social Science, or other related area may substitute for up to one (1) year of the law enforcement experience as listed in Option B.

Desired Qualifications

Spanish/English Bilingual Skills are highly desirable and should be noted on the application. Candidates who wish to be considered for bilingual positions must indicate bilingual ability on the application and will be subject to a bilingual screening.

The ideal candidate will exhibit strong oral and written communication skills and have experience administering polygraph examinations. Experience with Lafayette polygraph LX-4000 or LX-5000 instruments, and a strong working knowledge of the Zone Comparison Technique and numerical scoring is also highly desirable.

Membership in good standing with the California Association of Polygraph Examiners (CAPE) is highly desirable.
