About the Aviation Department The Kansas City Aviation Department is responsible for managing and operating Kansas City International Airport (MCI) and Kansas City Downtown Airport (Wheeler Field - MKC). As an enterprise fund department of the City of Kansas City, Missouri, it is fully supported by airport-generated revenues rather than tax funding. The department focuses on delivering safe, efficient, and cost-effective airport services to airlines, passengers, visitors, and the community. Its operations include overseeing airport administration, maintenance, promotions, and overall system performance while ensuring a high standard of customer service and operational excellence.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do:
Airport Security Officers are a visible and important part of the airport security team. The position requires situational awareness, sound judgment, professionalism, reliability, and the ability to interact effectively with airport employees, tenants, visitors, and the public.
- Routinely patrols airport buildings, grounds, airfield areas, runways, and taxiways by foot and vehicle.
- Monitors restricted access facilities to prevent unauthorized access to the airfield and parked aircraft.
- Identify and address security concerns involving trespassing, AOA breaches, property damage, theft, and other activities affecting airport security.
- Responds to security concerns and reports on unusual, suspicious, or unsafe conditions.
- Assist airport patrol operations, tenants, visitors, and other airport personnel as needed.
- Provide security support and assist with crowd control during events and other airport activities.
- Prepare accurate reports and maintain required activity and security logs.
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and may include walking, vehicle patrol, and exposure to changing weather conditions.
- Ability to work independently, follow established security procedures, communicate effectively, and respond appropriately to situations that may affect the safety and security of the airport.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of airport security and operations.
Important Information:
• Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in English via 2-way radio.
• Must successfully obtain and maintain an MKC Issued AOA Movement Area Badge with driving privileges.
• May be required to obtain the appropriate license issued by the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department, depending on the specific assignment.
Qualifications
REQUIRES
- High school graduation AND
- 1 year of experience as a security officer
- Ability to pass a background check, drug screen, and physical examination as prescribed by the City
- Ability to pass 10-year TSA Background Check
- Must possess a valid State-Issued driver's license
- May be required to obtain the appropriate license issued by the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department, depending on the specific assignment

Positions requiring a high school diploma/GED certificate must be obtained from a school/program accredited by the Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.
The minimum education requirement for positions that allow for experience equivalency for an accredited degree is a high school diploma. Unless otherwise specified, an accredited degree must be obtained from a college or university listed with the U.S. Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.
For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained. Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.
If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
