About the Aviation Department

The Kansas City Aviation Department is responsible for managing and operating Kansas City International Airport (MCI) and Kansas City Downtown Airport (Wheeler Field - MKC). As an enterprise fund department of the City of Kansas City, Missouri, it is fully supported by airport-generated revenues rather than tax funding. The department focuses on delivering safe, efficient, and cost-effective airport services to airlines, passengers, visitors, and the community. Its operations include overseeing airport administration, maintenance, promotions, and overall system performance while ensuring a high standard of customer service and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do:
• Administers, maintains, and supports enterprise database environments, including Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases across production, test, development, and other organizational environments, ensuring high levels of availability, performance, security, and reliability.
• Plans and executes database installations, configurations, upgrades, patches, migrations, and version changes, evaluating technical requirements, dependencies, risks, and potential impacts to applications and business operations.
• Monitors, analyzes, and optimizes database performance and capacity through proactive monitoring, performance tuning, query optimization, indexing strategies, resource management, and capacity planning.
• Designs, implements, and maintains database backup, recovery, high-availability, business continuity, and disaster recovery solutions to protect critical data and minimize service disruption.
• Ensures the security, integrity, availability, and reliability of enterprise databases through access controls, security configurations, auditing, data protection practices, vulnerability remediation, and compliance with organizational policies and industry best practices.
• Diagnoses and resolves complex database issues, including performance degradation, connectivity problems, data integrity issues, failures, availability concerns, and other issues requiring advanced technical analysis and troubleshooting.
• Serves as a technical resource and subject matter expert for database administration, providing technical guidance, recommendations, and support to application developers, system administrators, IT staff, vendors, and business stakeholders.
• Analyzes application and business requirements and recommends database solutions that support system functionality, scalability, performance, security, and long-term maintainability.
• Develops, maintains, and enforces database standards, procedures, configurations, and technical documentation to promote consistency, reliability, security, and operational efficiency across database environments.
• Evaluates emerging database technologies, tools, and methodologies and recommends improvements to enhance database performance, availability, security, scalability, and operational efficiency.
• Provides mentoring to IT staff by sharing database administration knowledge, troubleshooting techniques, best practices, and recommendations for resolving complex technical issues.
• Works independently to investigate and resolve complex technical problems, determining appropriate solutions and making recommendations that may have significant operational or organizational impact.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Positions requiring a high school diploma/GED certificate must be obtained from a school/program accredited by the Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

The minimum education requirement for positions that allow for experience equivalency for an accredited degree is a high school diploma. Unless otherwise specified, an accredited degree must be obtained from a college or university listed with the U.S. Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.
For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained.
Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.

If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
