THE DEPARTMENT

This position is in the Enterprise Applications - Data Architecture & Analytics (DAA) area, within the Information Technology & Institutional Planning (IT&IP) Division. Under the direction of the Executive Director, DAA serves the university by providing leadership and support for data architecture, visualization, and analytics. The office provides action-oriented data that helps decision-makers throughout the university to foster student success and institutional effectiveness.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Contribute to the design and enhancement of Business Intelligence (BI) Architecture
• Develop and maintain existing and new data models that form the foundation for accurate and timely reporting across the university.
• Create ETL (Extract, Transform, and Load) scripts to move data from source systems into the Business Intelligence reporting environment. Develop and maintain appropriate processing schedules. Troubleshoot in the event of load errors or system failures.
• Perform data validation and sanitation to ensure quality, accuracy, and relevance of the BI Architecture.
• Participate in the planning and implementing of migration from outdated to new data systems and tools.
• Proactively engage in ongoing professional development in order to stay abreast of emerging tools and approaches in this fast-changing field. Recommend new strategies based upon best practices.
• Work closely with the Department Leads and Director to research and develop solutions to integrate existing data sources into the campus-wide comprehensive reporting solution.
• Inform emerging campus data governance policies and practices and take these into consideration in the ongoing development of data and reporting sources.
• Utilize data integration tools to design, develop, and maintain data integration solutions to enable the efficient and effective exchange of data between disparate sources.
• Develop BI Reports and Dashboards
• Gather user requirements and develop solutions for campus-wide dashboards and reports based on campus reporting standards.
• Develop campus-wide dashboards by applying Tableau development skills and knowledge about best practices for effective data visualization.
• Develop standards and processes behind the migration of reports/dashboards from development to production environments.
• Processes include, but are not limited to: code review for adherence to standards; impact on performance; and the administration of security related to dashboards/reports and data.
• Apply accessible technology (ATI) guidelines to data visualizations.
• Work with end-users to troubleshoot and solve issues.
• Collaborate with department (DAA) colleagues in advocating for effective utilization of campus data by facilitating access, training, and use by faculty and staff throughout the campus community.
• Provide training for users in one-on-one and group settings.
• Develop documentation and data dictionaries for users.
• Seek and review exemplary models of dashboards used at other universities and suggest ways to adapt them for local use as appropriate.
• Lead in new development, enhancement, release, upgrade, or implementation projects, including developing and maintaining project plans in coordination with other team participants; managing project issues; collaborating with other project participants in accomplishing tasks, communicating issues to management and other project participants to ensure resolution
• Lead project management on sub-projects within an overall campus or department project.
• Coordinate task assignment and completion with staff members this position leads.
• Collaborate with multiple constituents (consultants, faculty, staff, and management) to address technical and functional issues, as well as implement new products and services or enhance existing services to meet campus and/or department needs.
• Communication and coordinate maintenance, support, and changes to the enterprise applications across a diverse audience, including technical staff (DBAs, developers, server administrators), functional departments (including Student Administration, Academic Affairs and Administrative Affairs), IT management, and CSU/CMS to plan changes, identify issues, and to mitigate unintended impacts.
• Coordinate technical testing to ensure end-to-end testing across interdependent groups. Provide technical expertise to developers, system administration, and end-users to ensure comprehensive testing. Document and communicate results of testing. Track issues to resolution.
• Demonstrate strong analytical, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.

QUALIFICATIONS

• To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in applications programming and systems analysis and related programming support functions is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor’s degree, preferably in computer science or business, or equivalent training and applied experience. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Analyst/Programmer, depending on the position assignment, may include working knowledge of a specific industry standard applications programming language and knowledge of standard systems
• Incumbents at the expert level work almost completely independently on the most complex problems and work assignments. They possess an advanced and comprehensive knowledge of the technical specialty and a working knowledge of related specialties and are able to apply this extensive expertise as a generalist or specialist. Experts are proactive and understand problems from broad, interactive perspective and are able to develop solutions that combine information and ideas in new, unprecedented ways. Incumbents at this level are capable of leading teams and implementation efforts for assigned projects using advanced communication and listening skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in data reporting and report developing, preferably in a higher education environment.
• Working knowledge of ETL (Extract/Translate/Load) tool.
• Experience in dimensional data modeling.
• Five years of experience in business intelligence, preferably in a higher education environment.
• Knowledge of data warehouse and business intelligence tools and best practices. Demonstrated competence in relational databases and structured programming design, ability to write and edit SQL queries.
• Experience in dimensional data modeling. Experience with PeopleSoft tables and data.
• Experience with data visualization tools (eg. Tableau). Working knowledge of Oracle RDBMS. ODI (Oracle Data Integrator) - ETL tool Software release and system change management experience.
• Data analysis and programming languages (e.g. R, Python) Comprehensive knowledge, skills and abilities to perform requirements analysis.
• Expertise and skills with technical and functional problems identification, resolving and tracking.
• Advanced experience with using PC tools (Word processing, diagramming and spreadsheets).
• Effective communication of technical issues and solutions to faculty, staff, and management.
• Ability to work with shifting and demanding deadlines and workload.
• Ability to research multiple sources and recommended solutions to problems.
• Experience working in higher education

CSU Classification Salary Range

This position is part of the CSUEU bargaining unit. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $7,020 and maximum $13,594 per month.
