ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $4,389 - $5,000

• However, offer amount will be commensurate with candidate’s experience, education, skills, and training.

CSU CLASSIFICATION SALARY RANGE: $4,389 - $7,617

POSITION PURPOSE: The School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics & Engineering’s (NSME) technical support staff play a critical role in supporting the School’s and CSUB’s mission, vision, and values.

Under general supervision of the Dean of the School of NSME, with daily lead direction from the Director of Grants and Outreach, the Instructional Support Technician II provides comprehensive technical and logistical support to the Fab Lab, ensuring the effective preparation, maintenance, and operation of materials, supplies, and equipment for a wide range of instructional and research activities. The position collaborates closely with faculty and course leaders to facilitate lab sessions, support undergraduate and graduate research, and assist in the development of new instructional methodologies. Additionally, the incumbent is responsible for maintaining lab safety standards, leading student assistants, and managing inventory and procurement processes to ensure a safe, efficient, and well-equipped learning environment.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fab Lab Support

• Collaborate with the department chairs and course team leaders to identity and prepare necessary lab supplies, materials, and equipment for both lower level and upper division laboratory courses.
• Participate in planning meetings to discuss upcoming instructional needs, ensuring that all required materials and equipment are available and in working order.
• Develop detailed schedules for the preparation and provision of both technical and non-technical materials, supplies, and equipment. Ensure timely delivery and setup for all lab sessions, including the removal and proper storage of equipment post-lab.
• Prepare samples and materials and provide technical assistance for undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research.
• Ensure that all research materials are properly stored and maintained.
• Offer guidance on the correct use of specialized equipment and provide troubleshooting support during research activities.
• Assist with the preparation of materials and equipment for specific instructional projects.
• Serve as a key resource for faculty in developing new instructional activities and demonstrations, advising on the selection and utilization of materials and equipment.
• Contribute to the design of new experiments or instructional tools by offering technical expertise and suggestions for optimizing lab setups.
• Provide lead direction to student assistants in the Fab Lab and library annex, assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and ensuring adherence to safety and operational protocols.
• Train student assistants on the proper handling of equipment, materials, and supplies, as well as on maintaining the lab's cleanliness and order.

Fab Lab Maintenance and Supplies

• Ensure that all equipment and supply storage areas, as well as laboratory spaces, are kept clean, organized, and in compliance with university safety standards. Implement a regular cleaning schedule and inspect storage areas for proper arrangement of materials.
• Perform routine checks and adjustments on technical equipment to ensure they are calibrated correctly and functioning at optimal levels. Document all calibration activities and report any issues requiring further technical repair.
• Communicate with the appropriate departments or vendors to arrange for equipment repairs and track the status of repairs to minimize downtime.
• Procure necessary materials, supplies, and equipment through established purchasing procedures, including writing specifications, sourcing unique items, and solving any shipping or supply chain issues.
• Monitor and issue materials, supplies, and equipment to faculty and students, ensuring accurate tracking of usage and availability.
• Maintain an electronic inventory database, regularly updating it with new acquisitions, and conducting periodic audits to ensure accuracy and compliance with university standards.
• Conduct a comprehensive annual audit of all equipment and accessory items, verifying their condition, functionality, and location within the inventory system.
• Prepare detailed reports on the audit findings and recommend replacements or upgrades as necessary.

Ensure Safe Environment

• Support and follow university safety protocols. Support and actively champion university safety protocols within the
• Fab Lab, ensuring that all safety procedures are followed during lab sessions and while handling equipment and materials.
• Collaborate with the NSME Safety Officer to review and update safety procedures as needed, ensuring compliance with the latest safety standards and regulations.
• Serve as a member of the campus emergency response team and the NSME Safety Committee, contributing to the development and implementation of safety initiatives.
• Establish protocols for safe and effective use of equipment and monitor safety conditions. Identify potential hazards and take corrective actions to mitigate risks. Report any safety concerns to the appropriate authorities for immediate resolution.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE - Equivalent to three (3) years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the area to which assigned.

OR

Equivalent to two (2) years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

OR

Equivalent to four (4) years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA’s) -

• Comprehensive knowledge of safety standards and protocols for laboratory environments, including the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials, as well as the ability to develop and enforce safety procedures.
• Proficiency in managing inventories, including the procurement of specialized materials and equipment, maintaining an electronic inventory system, and conducting regular audits to ensure accuracy and compliance.
• Technical problem-solving skills to troubleshoot simple equipment issues, provide technical support to faculty and students, and assist in the development of new instructional activities or research projects that require specialized materials or equipment.
• Ability to maintain records.
• Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in physics, engineering, or related discipline.
• Knowledge of transformers, motors, generators, and other technical machinery.
• Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment possessing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: MEDIUM WORK - up to 40% of the activities involve sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling or walking; lifting heavy weight objects limited to 50 pounds; may involve pushing and pulling objects within the weight limits.
