THE POSITION

IDEAL CANDIDATE STATEMENT

The ideal candidate will have prior experience fabricating and installing wooden structures. They will be proficient in reading blueprints and using various types of tools and equipment related to carpentry. They will be well versed in commercial and residential construction and have the ability to deliver high-quality projects in framing, roofing, finishing, door installation, windows, and siding. It is highly desirable they are capable of multitasking and managing other trades on a variety of projects. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership abilities with a focus on teamwork and customer satisfaction.

DEFINITION
This is skilled work of the journey-level involving both rough and finished carpentry work. Employees perform assignments in the construction and maintenance of structural woodwork and equipment requiring the skilled use of standard carpenter tools and power driven woodworking machinery. Assignments are normally made orally or in the form of rough sketches or blueprints. Work is inspected for satisfactory compliance with instructions, although routine repairs are usually made independently without supervision or review.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Repairs and maintains doors, floors, windows, partitions, roofs, and small parts of buildings
- Repairs and builds tables, shelves, desks, playground apparatus and other wood equipment and fixtures
- Builds rough wooden structures such as barricades, fences and scaffolds and does sheeting and rough carpentry on park and other City buildings
- Performs hand and bench work in carpentry shop; operates planers, joiners, drill presses, power saws, and other woodworking machinery
- Repairs hand tools, shovels, rakes, band saws; sharpens axes, joiner blades, and rip and chain saws
- Performs related work as required

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
- Standard practices, methods, materials, and tools of the carpentry trade.
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Ability to:
- Plan, lay out and perform carpentry work of average difficulty.
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Skill in:
-The care and use of hand and bench tools and equipment of the carpentry trade.

Experience and Education:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be experience as a journey-level Carpenter or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in this work.

PROOF OF EDUCATION

Should education be used to qualify for this position, then proof of education such as, but not limited to, university/college transcripts and degrees should be submitted with your application and will be required at the time of appointment . Unofficial documents and/or copies are acceptable.

An applicant with a college degree obtained outside the United States must have education records evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. Evaluation of education records will be due at time of appointment.

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at time of appointment. Loss of the Class C license is cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be considered for accommodation on a case-by-case basis.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:

Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.

1. Application: (Pass/Fail) - All applicants must complete and submit online a City of Sacramento employment application to the Employment Office by the final filing deadline ;

















2. Screening Committee : (Pass/Fail)- Human Resources will evaluate employment applications for the minimum qualifications stated on the job announcement.

3. Screening For Most Qualified: (Pass/Fail) - In the event of a large candidate pool, each candidate's Work Experience section of the application will be evaluated and rated. Only those candidates determined to be the most qualified will proceed to the next step in the selection process. A resume will not substitute for the information required in the Work Experience section of the application.

4. Performance Test: (Weighted 100%) - Qualified candidates will be notified by email of the test date, time, and location approximately one to two weeks prior to the test. The performance test will be job related and may include, but not limited to, the knowledge and abilities as outlined above. The performance exam will be administered in English only.

TEST EXEMPTION - If you have previously taken the Carpenter exam within the past year of the final filing date of this posting, you may be considered exempt from taking the Carpenter Exam.

The City of Sacramento’s Human Resources Department will verify applicant’s eligibility at the time of the final filing deadline of this job posting.

5. Eligibility - Candidates who pass the performance test will be placed on an eligible list. The hiring department may contact those on the eligible list for an interview at any time during the life of the one-year list. Candidate’s eligibility expires year from the date of notification of a passing score for the Carpenter examination. Candidates can take the examination at any time to maintain eligibility.







6. Conditional Hire : Upon receipt of a conditional offer, the selected candidate must complete and pass Live Scan/fingerprinting. If applicable, candidates may also need to pass a pre-employment medical exam, controlled substance and/or alcohol test, and possess any required licensure or certification prior to receiving a start date from the Department. Failure to meet these prerequisites will be grounds for withdrawal of your conditional offer of employment.
