Key Responsibilities:

• Leadership & Planning: Collaborate with the Assistant Vice President for Community and Belonging to provide strategic leadership and long-term planning for the CIR.
• Innovative Program Development: Lead efforts to create, implement, and evaluate programs aimed at enhancing outreach, retention, academic success, and leadership development for minoritized students.
• Strategic Vision: Shape the role of the CIR in supporting SDSU’s academic and public service mission through creative leadership and strategic planning.
• Collaboration: Work closely with the Division of Student Affairs, Division of Academic Affairs, Division of Diversity and Innovation, students, staff, and community partners to deliver impactful training, programs, and services.
• Multicultural Initiatives: Manage SDSU’s multicultural efforts, including multiracial and multiethnic initiatives, the Multicultural Learning Community, and support for other minoritized student groups.

Community Engagement:

• Representation: Act as a representative of SDSU to external community and governmental organizations.
• Resource & Support: Serve as a resource for addressing sensitive equity, crisis, and individualized issues related to multicultural students.
• Mentorship: Mentor and advise students, and provide support to other faculty and staff members on campus.
• Program Design: Collaborate with interns and student assistants to design and deliver programs that promote leadership development, equity, social equality, and access to basic needs.

Position Information

• Full-time, at-will role, offering comprehensive benefits.
• Position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
• Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
• The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The mission of SDSU’s Community Centers is to support student success through a framework that addresses equity, justice, and inclusion. Centers facilitate the learning and growth of traditionally underserved students through programs and events that educate the campus; facilitation of intergroup dialogues to address pressing issues; and advocacy with campus stakeholders to create an institutional climate that supports the students served by the Centers.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Ethnic Studies, Cultural Studies, or a related field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience
• 4 years of progressively responsible professional experience providing student services
• 4 years of experience promoting diversity and inclusion in higher education or a similarly complex organization
• Experience managing staff and/or student teams

Key Qualifications

• Considerable knowledge of student and leadership development theory, identity development models, group and individual behavior principles, and implications for practice.
• Documented experience developing and coordinating programs and events.
• Knowledge, sensitivity, and understanding of the social, political, personal, and cross-cultural needs of diverse students.
• Ability to collaborate and work with other units regarding issues of diversity and community.
• Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with key senior management, faculty, and administrators regarding issues that impact students.
• Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and excellent judgment in responding to conversional, sensitive, and/or emotional issues and situations.
• Competency in cross-cultural communication.
• Experience participating in and leading movement(s) to create meaningful systemic change.
• Bilingual or multilingual preferred.
• Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advance notice.

The expected salary for this position ranges from $75,000 to $82,416 per year.
