DescriptionThe City of Laguna Beach Public Works & Utilities Department is seeking an experienced and dedicated professional to join our team as a
Maintenance Lead Worker in the
Landscape Maintenance Division. This role provides the opportunity to lead and oversee a crew, performing a variety of maintenance tasks while ensuring the health and upkeep of public landscapes. If you have expertise in contract administration, irrigation systems, plant materials, horticulture, and arboriculture, we encourage you to apply. In this position, you will report to a Division Supervisor or other assigned personnel and will direct and supervise lower-level staff. Schedule: This position may receive calls for emergency service and may be required to respond during non-scheduled work hours, including evenings, holidays and weekends. The Maintenance Lead Worker may be assigned to either a 5/40 schedule, a 9/80 schedule, or any other schedule required to meet operational needs. Work may be performed outside of the normal work schedule, including evening hours and weekends.

QualificationsAny combination of education and experience demonstrating the ability to effectively and successfully perform the duties of the position is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:
Special Provision: Employee may respond to traffic emergencies as the primary “on call” staff member during scheduled and non-scheduled work hours, including evenings, holidays and weekends. Residency within 20 miles of Laguna Beach City limits is highly desired.
Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent, preferably supplemented by coursework in horticulture, landscape and grounds maintenance, irrigation management and/or supervision/management.
Experience: Considerable experience in the performance of public works maintenance and construction work at a journey level or higher or two years as a Maintenance Worker II in the appropriate area with the City of Laguna Beach; minimum of six months experience in supervising or overseeing the work of others. Experience effectively dealing with the public.
License/Certificate Requirements: Those in possession of a valid California Class A or B driver’s license must not have an automatic transmission restriction or an air brake restriction. The incumbent must be able to provide a DMV printout, a current medical card and successfully pass a police background check. A fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice, a pre-placement medical exam and drug test are also required. Incumbents who are not in possession of a valid California Class A or B driver’s license at the time of hire will be required to obtain the required commercial license with the necessary endorsements by the end of the twelve (12) month probationary period.
Desirable Certificates: ISA Certified Arborist, California Department of Pesticide Regulation QAL/QAC, any irrigation certificates and/or any other technical certificates related to landscaping, irrigation or Public Works.

The appointing hiring authority will further review the job-related qualifications of those deemed eligible for hire before making selection decisions. Pre-Placement Process: The selected candidate must successfully pass a fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice, a pre-placement physical and drug test, educational and employment verification, and reference check(s).
