The Team... The Engineering Bureau consists of six of the following divisions: Construction Management, Engineering Design, Maintenance, Program Management, Project Controls, and Survey.
The Survey Division provides support for terminal development/redevelopment, terminal operations, and ship navigation by documenting the use and configuration of the Port's above water and submerged lands and existing features.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES The Role... Under general supervision, the Survey Intern performs routine, non-professional engineering work on a survey party. The position reports to the Survey’s Trailer at the Port of Long Beach’s Maintenance Facility (725 Harbor Plaza, Long Beach, CA 90802) and start time is 6:30am.
The non-career Intern position typically works 20 hours per week, and cannot exceed an average of 29 hours per week throughout the year, up to a total of 1600 hours in a year for a maximum of two years. Flexibility is offered within typical business hours. The assignment may end at any time, but under no circumstances will it extend beyond two years.
How you get to contribute: - Assist in construction staking.
- Measure distances with surveying chain or electronic equipment.
- Operate construction leveling equipment.
- Operate precise leveling equipment.
- Perform varied field and office calculations using calculators and computers.
- Make sketches and field notes.
- Occasionally operate survey instruments including RTK GPS and total stations.
- Assist in the operation of a boat and hydrographic survey equipment.
- Set out and remove traffic warning flags and barrier cones.
- Carry survey instruments and equipment.
- Clean and care for instruments and tools.
- Drive survey truck incidental to primary assignment.
- Perform other related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILE Required Experience and Qualifications: - Current students attending an accredited college or university, recent graduates (within the last 12 months at the time of application), or students in a graduate program.
- A major in Surveying, Geomatics, Engineering and/or related field is preferred.
- Coursework in surveying and engineering courses is desired.
- Ability to perform physical labor involved in surveying. Includes stooping, twisting, kneeling, and the ability to carry up to 25 lbs.
- A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
Technical Skills Needed: - Must be able to perform physical labor involved in field surveying.
- Must be familiar with MS Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and other related applications.
- Must have good proofreading and editing skills.
- Ability to operate printers and plotters is desired.
- Familiarity with CAD software desired.
Professional Knowledge and Characteristics: To REALLY catch our attention, your profile and experience will demonstrate the following professional attributes and strengths:
- Thorough knowledge of mathematics through trigonometry is required.
- Basic knowledge of engineering, public works and real estate terminology is desired.
