Job Summary Responsible for care and maintenance of grass/turf, flowers, shrubs, and trees located in City parks, trails, and City owned/maintained areas; observes and reports structural and horticultural problems; installs new plan material following specific plans; maintains planter beds. Essential Job Functions
Manages the ornamental planter areas to include all maintenance, design, and procurement of plant material for seasonal displays; performs annual landscaped bed care consisting of planting, weeding, pruning, dead heading, watering, mulching, and cultivation.
Inspects landscaping and trees to detect evidence of diseases, insects, irrigation problems, or other conditions endangering or inhibiting proper growth; takes corrective measures as needed.
Applies pesticides and fertilizers to designated areas as needed.
Monitors irrigation systems and ensures they are working properly; performs hand watering when necessary.
Manages the ordering and receiving of plants from vendors including their adherence to specifications.
Performs occasional oversight of a crew member/small crew or volunteer group.
Inspects assigned park/landscape areas, facilities, and trails, for maintenance priorities, damage, hazards and vandalism; schedules maintenance and repairs as needed.
Operates and performs inspections, maintenance, and repairs on various tools, equipment, and machinery used in building and grounds maintenance tasks.
Assists other park crews when assigned to perform a variety of park grounds maintenance activities, including fertilizing, weed control, pest control, mowing, seeding and watering; cleans up trash and debris; prunes and trims trees and shrubs; plants and extracts trees; loads and hauls materials.
Monitors work sites to ensure adherence to safety rules and regulations and that work zones and equipment are safe; recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts or conditions as required.
Coordinates setup, teardown, and other tasks for special City events as directed; works assigned duties during City special events.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Responds regularly and promptly to work.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED . Additional course work in Horticulture Science or related field is preferred.
Requires at least three (3) years of work experience related to landscape maintenance, groundskeeping, and/or horticulture.
Equivalent combinations of education, experience, certification, and training may also be considered.
Licenses, Certifications & Special Requirements
Texas Class C driver’s license with good driving record as measured by the City’s evaluation system.
Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator License issued through Texas Department of Agriculture with a minimum category of 3A is required within 12 months of hire.
