Position DutiesThe Department of Transportation is currently seeking to fill 1 vacancy for the Internship position with the Pavement Engineering group.
Pavement/Bridge/ADA Curb Ramps Engineering plays a critical role in the maintenance and rehabilitation of approximately 2,512 miles of pavement citywide, overseeing the maintenance of approximately 250 bridges, and over 24,000 curb ramps.
Intern for the Infrastructure Management Division, Pavement Engineering group will assist in delivering the City’s annual pavement capital improvement projects for the arterial streets & collector streets in San Jose. Tasks and assignments could include, but are not limited to, assisting with planning, design review, data collection, analysis for:
• Quantification of future ADA ramp projects & paving projects
• Reviewing construction documents for active paving and ADA curb ramp projects
• GIS data management for future pavement projects, ADA curb ramp assets, PCI data and other miscellaneous layers.
• Collecting public outreach information for future construction activities
• Investigating public concerns relevant to road conditions & ADA curb ramp conditions
Minimum QualificationsEducation and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to completion of high school and current enrollment in an accredited college or university with a major in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the state of California may be required in performing job duties.
Other QualificationsAvailability of up to 20 hours per week is preferred, though actual hours may vary based on business needs. This role includes up to two days of in-person work at the San Jose Mabury Yard, as needed. This position requires proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of applications. Additionally, proficiency in the following skills is desirable: ArcGIS, CAD, mapping tools, as well as the ability to speak and/or write any of the following languages: Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin), Tagalog/Filipino, Korean.
Strong applicants will be organized; possess excellent analytical skills; hold strong verbal and written communication skills; be comfortable working with diverse communities; and be able to travel to off-site locations for outreach and field research.

Part-time positions(less than 40 hours per week) are required to participate in the City’s PTC 457 Deferred Compensation Plan per Federal regulations. Employees are required to contribute 3.75% of gross earning and the City contributes a matching amount of 3.75%. The funds contributed by the City are 100% vested upon initial deferral and will be held in in a stability of principal investment. This plan is in lieu of social security and does not include any healthcare benefits or contributions.
Part-time employees may elect to contribute additional retirement savings through the City’s Voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. Additional Information on both plans can be found on the
