The Department of Public Works is seeking a dynamic and experienced Deputy Director* to oversee the operations of the Solid Waste Division. Under general direction, this position plans, directs, and coordinates the work of the division, ensuring the efficient management of solid waste planning, operations, and project development. This is an exciting opportunity for a proven leader to make a significant impact on the County’s public infrastructure and environmental services.

The Deputy Director leads staff, including engineers, planners, and field personnel, overseeing operations of landfills, transfer stations, and recycling programs. They manage the division’s budget, ensure compliance with solid waste and environmental regulations, and coordinate projects such as landfill expansions and waste diversion initiatives. The role involves setting project priorities, schedules, and evaluating proposed projects based on impact, cost, and community needs. Responsibilities also include establishing policies for operations, personnel, and budgets, representing the division in meetings with stakeholders, and supporting staff development and performance evaluations.

The Solid Waste Division is responsible for the operation and management of the County's comprehensive solid waste system. This includes maintaining multiple landfills, transfer stations, and waste diversion programs to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations. Outstanding Compensation and Benefits

San Bernardino County offers a generous compensation package that includes a competitive salary within the designated 88C salary range and our excellent Exempt C Benefits package . The County also offers an alternative Modified Benefit Option (MBO) that provides a wage differential of 4% above the base salary rate with a complementing modified leaves package and benefits.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must possess all of the following requirements:
License: Must be a Registered Civil Engineer in the State of California. Indicate registration number in the Certificate/License section of the application. Education: A Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a closely-related field. Experience:
Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in the management and supervision of professional and technical personnel involved in public works projects, from planning through design, and the construction and maintenance of public works facilities. Candidates must have at least one (1) year of qualifying management level experience as above.

Education Substitution: Applications may be accepted from candidates who possess a Bachelor's degree in an unrelated field if they are Registered Civil Engineers in the State of California and have eight (8) years of qualifying experience.

Degree/Coursework Note: Any qualifying degree/coursework obtained outside the United States must be accompanied by an equivalency report from an accredited credential evaluation service.
