The ITD Infrastructure & Operations Division serves as the backbone of the County's technology landscape. The Division seeks a Network Services Engineer I to provide professional engineering and technical support for the County’s on-premise and cloud-based infrastructure that delivers unified communication services in the areas of network, voice, video, radio, and broadcast. The ideal candidate will have work experience and knowledge of Cloud and on-premise network technologies such as DevOps or network automation, MPLS, software-defined network, Cisco ISE and Nexus Fabric, and Palo Alto Networks firewall.
The Eligible List established by this recruitment may be used to fill current and future vacancies on a regular full-time, part-time, or temporary basis.
This classification is part of a flexible series. Incumbents appointed at the lower level of the career series may be promoted up to the higher level of the career series subject to their meeting the employment standards for the higher class and a recommendation for their promotion by the appointing authority.
Examples of Duties- Performs routine professional and technical support in the design, engineering, installation, configuration and maintenance for assigned infrastructure systems, conducts root cause analysis of infrastructure malfunctions, and creates and implements solution strategies and/or escalates to appropriate staff as needed.
- Consults with clients, other departments, departmental staff, vendors, and technical support personnel to determine solutions to infrastructure problems; develops operating procedures and systems designs to ensure system performance meets user requirements.
- Documents enterprise infrastructure requirements, configurations, operations, and procedures.
- Collaborates with project team members, vendors and stakeholders to participate in gathering user and systems requirements, setting deliverables and expectations, developing resource and budget requirements, identifying and evaluating project risks, implementing systems and solutions and providing support including writing technical and user documentation.
- Under direction, designs, implements and supports infrastructure architecture.
THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATEWill have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Some knowledge of :
- Infrastructure design, engineering, configuration, installation, maintenance and monitoring methods and techniques related to assigned systems and equipment (i.e. Switch/Routing Protocols, QoS Configuration, Data Packet Analysis and Troubleshooting Tools and Software, Wireless Hardware, Firewall Hardware and Configuration).
- Techniques and methods of system evaluation, implementation, and documentation.
- Effective customer service techniques.
Skill and Ability to :
- Effectively analyze, identify, and diagnose common infrastructure related problems and take corrective measures or make recommendations that lead to a problem resolution.
- Plan, design, implement and coordinate routine infrastructure projects and perform technical support functions for assigned systems.
- Understand the impact of organizational, administrative, and personnel aspects of infrastructure designs.
- Produce and assemble technical documentation of infrastructure site surveys, project plans, system diagrams, and wiring schemes consistent with enterprise standards and procedures.
- Gather, organize, and evaluate data, draw logical conclusions, and make effective recommendations.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with technical and non-technical audiences.
- Organize and prioritize a variety of projects and multiple tasks in an effective and timely manner; organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.
- Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural and legal guidelines.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of data and information processed.
- Deal tactfully with the customers and staff in providing training, information and services, and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Examples of Experience/Education/TrainingAny combination of training, education, and/or experience which provides for the knowledge, skills, and abilities and required conditions of employment is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:
Education : Possession of a bachelor's degree in Information Security, Computer Science, IT Communications or a closely related field.
OR
Experience : Four (4) years of technical experience performing information security, network systems and/or desktop systems support work.
OR
Experience: Two (2) years of experience performing work equivalent to an IT Support Specialist in the County of Monterey.
Desirable C ertifications : Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Palo Alto Networks Certified Network System Administrator (PCNSA), Cisco Certified Meraki Administrator (CCMA), Certified Wireless Specialist (CWS).
Additional InformationCONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: The required conditions of employment include, but are not limited to the following:
- Successfully pass a background investigation including but not limited to a fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice.
- Possess and a valid California Class "C" driver's license with a satisfactory driving record or be able to provide suitable transportation that is approved by the appointing authority.
- Be available to work outside of normal business hours as needed, including on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays and during times of emergency and/or disaster.
