Job Summary/Objectives: The Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for planning, building, and maintaining the County’s systems and infrastructure. This role provides high-level support for systems, telecommunications, networks (Internet/Intranet, on-premises/Cloud), including hardware and software evaluation, installation, maintenance, and tuning for the County.Essential Functions: - Configure and maintain hardware and software related to the County’s servers, infrastructure, virtual machine environments (Nutanix, VMware).
- Maintain the County’s Exchange and Active Directory environments.
- Evaluate various hardware and software products, including servers, infrastructure, and SaaS products.
- Install and maintain major systems and software related to LAN, WAN, servers, networks, virtual machines, and cloud environments.
- Install and maintain hardware for networking, servers, and telecommunications.
- Optimize all systems and software for maximum operating efficiency.
- Perform system software maintenance during evenings and weekends as needed.
- Conduct cost justification analysis for additional hardware, software, and infrastructure.
- Design and enforce data and system security policies and procedures and best practices.
- Monitor system resource availability and loads for LAN, WAN, infrastructure, and servers daily and take action to improve performance.
- Quality control checks on the work of other staff.
- Prepare reports and graphical presentations to document systems performance.
- Provide status reports to supervisors and management, meeting departmental and organizational deadlines.

Competency: Knowledge/Skills/Abilities :- Expertise in Exchange (both on-premises and cloud).
- Mastery of Active Directory (both on-premises and cloud).
- Proficiency in the Azure cloud computing environment.
- Knowledge of Cisco device configurations.
- Expertise in WiFi and Microsoft platforms, including Azure, O365, Windows OS, Windows Server OS, Windows SQL Server, VMware, Cisco IOS, Cisco Telephony, DMARC/DKIM configurations, SSO integrations, and Next-Generation Firewall management.
- Strong abilities in systems administration and system design, with formal education or training.
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge of TCP/IP networking and datacenter virtualization technologies, including shared storage.
- Ability to work effectively on multiple priorities with strict deliverable timelines, demonstrating high self-motivation and keen attention to detail.
- Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities, with effective oral and written communication skills.
- Capacity to work independently and in a collaborative, team-oriented environment, with strong troubleshooting and logical abilities.
- Demonstrate a strong leadership attitude while supporting projects and organizational goals.
- Provide customers with professional, empathetic, and responsive service.
- Demonstrate excellent attention to detail, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
Required Education/Certifications: - Baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college/university in computer science, information systems management, business management, or a related field.
- Community college degree in Computer Science or Business.
- Additional experience may be substituted for education.
Preferred Qualifications/Certifications: - Prefer 4+ years of related experience.
- Relevant certifications such as HDI, A+, Network+, MCP, MCSA, MCSE, ITIL, PMP, PBA, ECBA, CCBA, CBAP, CISSP, CSEP, CCNP, CISSP-A.
Physical and Mental Requirements: - Work is typically performed in an office, data center or conference rooms.
- Communicate in in-person and virtual meetings.
- Regular use of telephone and chat.
- Regular use of computers.
- Regular handling of small computer components.
- Lifting of up to 100 pounds.
- Occasional need to perform urgent tasks to meet organizational deadlines.
- Occasional work after normal business hours.
- Occasional weekend duties.
- Occasional operation of County vehicles to travel to locations throughout the County is required.
- Regular contact other county employees and senior leadership at all levels of County government.
- Employees in this position may be considered essential personnel and fall under Albemarle County AP4 and in addition, be subject to working overtime, being held over, or called back for disasters, local emergencies, or special events.
Remote Work: This position is eligible for a hybrid remote work schedule that is in compliance with the County’s Remote Work Policy and meets the operational and service needs for the position. All County staff must maintain residence within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Salary Range: The hiring range for this position is $42.81- $47.31 per hour (approx. $ 89,039 - $ 98,411 per year). Starting offer is based on applicable education beyond minimum requirements and internal equity. The position also provides excellent benefits including 12 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, VRS retirement, and continuing education/training opportunities. This is a full time, FLSA exempt position. Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with Local Government Personnel Policy, §P-60.
