This position directs the operations of the Bill Room/Mail Room and Publications Office, confers with managers on recommended hiring, salary increases and promotions, disciplinary actions and employee evaluations.
Supervises inventory and property control procedures, the operation and maintenance of facilities, furnishings and equipment, and all chamber employees (page, doorkeepers, sergeant-at-arms) during House proceedings and assists, as needed, in the House Chamber.
Plans, coordinates and oversees internal construction, remodeling and office renovations and relocations; prepares reports and estimates on budgetary expenditures, and performs other related work as required.
The Director of Operations should have a thorough knowledge of the legislative process, functional knowledge of procurement practices and regulations regulating contract services, and management skills appropriate to supervising both management and professional staff. This position requires the ability to perform duties in a non-partisan and non-discriminatory manner, work in a high pressure, fast-paced environment, adapt to various situations, and prioritize multiple work assignments simultaneously while managing various interruptions and still meeting deadlines.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, move from place to place quickly, as needed, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Bachelor’s degree and five (5) years of experience in a field relevant to the operational management of a large complex, of which two years must be in a legislative environment. Operational management or related experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for required education. Procurement experience preferred.
Applicants must have the ability to remain objective, non-partisan, and professional regarding all legislative matters and work well under pressure with minimal supervision.
The House prohibits the hiring of any person who at the time of initial hiring is related to any member within the fourth degree by blood or marriage.
