Description

Job Summary

Operates a variety of semi-heavy equipment to install, repair, replace, clean and maintain the beach, streets, alleys, sidewalks and other related areas including the City's cemetery. Maintains tools and equipment. Assists in leading the work activities of a crew, as assigned.

Works under the general supervision of a management or supervisory employee, arranging, planning and performing routine assignments alone. Detailed instructions are regularly provided and work is periodically reviewed. Assists in leading and coordinating the work activities of assigned staff.

Representative Duties

Note: Duties may vary dependent upon assignment.

Operates backhoes, dump trucks, side loading garbage trucks, skip loaders, tractors, mini haulers, forklifts, scooters, riding mowers, jackhammers, and other hand and power equipment to install, repair and maintain streets, alleys, walkways, beach areas, and cemetery grounds.

Utilizes various hydraulic and pneumatic tools and equipment to remove concrete and asphalt and assist with excavation and backfilling operations.

Loads, transports and delivers sand, gravel, soil, compost, refuse, construction materials and other supplies and equipment.

Breaks concrete, pavement surfaces and topsoil. Cleans, prepares and/or mixes materials to install, replace and repair a variety of structures, surfaces and fixtures.

Performs general landscaping work and grounds keeping work, including but not limited to: grass cutting; weeding; pruning; planting; hedge trimming; marker edging; tree root removal; and fertilizer, pesticide and herbicide usage.

Maintains, installs and repairs equipment, machinery, power tools, sprinkler systems and irrigations systems. Reports damaged or unsafe equipment to supervisor.

Removes graffiti and paints public benches, boards and trash cans.

Cemetery assignments require grave site and burial preparation. Digs and squares graves; makes concrete borders for grave markers; takes measurements to set markers at grave site; installs markers and lowering device and platform; and arranges seating and carpeting. May perform interments.

Places safety barricades, delineators, and cones to identify job sites and redirect traffic.

Completes and maintains logs of labor and equipment. Checks, cleans and maintains tools and equipment.

Assists in training others in the safe and proper use of machinery, hand and power tools, and motorized equipment.

May lead and coordinate the work of a crew, as assigned

Follows applicable safety rules and regulations.

Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Requirements

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

Knowledge of:

Safe and proper operation of a variety of semi-heavy equipment.

Use of hand, gardening and power tools and equipment.

Landscaping and grounds keeping principles and practices.

Mechanical maintenance practices and procedures.

General construction practices.

Basic techniques of street maintenance and repair.

Principles and techniques of concrete handling and asphalt laying.

Basic mathematics.

Use and application of fertilizers and pesticides.

Safe work practices.
Effective customer service techniques.

Ability to:

Safely and properly operate power tools and heavy equipment, including outboard attachments and asphalt paving and milling machines.

Train, lead and coordinate the work of others.

Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Perform mathematical calculations.

Read maps, charts, blue prints and diagrams.

Perform physical labor for sustained periods.

Work in confined spaces, including deep and narrow trenches.

Lift, carry and move heavy objects.

Identify mechanical problems and perform mechanical adjustments.

Perform simple repairs and maintenance of irrigation systems.

Learn and use required computer software applications.

Prepare and maintain logs and records.

Meet strict deadlines.

Learn and apply City codes, policies and regulations.

Follow written and oral instructions.

Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the general public.

Education, Training and Experience:

Graduation from high school or the equivalent.

Two years of recent, paid work experience operating semi-heavy equipment in construction work and/or grounds maintenance related work.

Licenses and Certificates :

Possession of a valid Class B driver license.

WORKING CONDITIONS :

Work is regularly performed outside in seasonal heat and cold, various weather conditions, on slippery surfaces, and in cramped positions. Moving objects, vibrations, noise, dust, dirt, soils and odors are frequently encountered. Some work is also performed indoors. Possible burns and exposure to chemicals are occasionally encountered. Physical demands include climbing, lifting, bending, carrying and moving heavy objects up to 75-100 pounds, with assistance as necessary, and sitting for extended periods.
