The Fleet Technician Crew Lead will perform skilled and specialized mechanical repairs on vehicles and motorized equipment, including trailers maintained by Fleet Services.

The location and work schedule of this position may include day and evening hours, weekends and holidays.

This has been designated as an Essential Employee position. In the event of a City-designated emergency, Essential Employees provide services that impact the public health, safety, utility services, and welfare of members of the Austin community and other employees and ensure the continuity of essential operations. In such an emergency, Essential Employees may be called back in, may be required to modify their schedule, may be assigned to a City-designated work site, or may be retained on site to assist with operations and recovery.

Driving Requirement: These positions require a license for the operation of commercial vehicles in the state of Texas within one hundred twenty (120) days of employment. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.


Serves as lead to provide guidance and on-the-job training. Monitors team members work/repairs for efficiencies and quality of repairs. Documents and provides reporting to Fleet Management on quality of repair. Documents crew member’s deficiencies and recommends training. Performs complex gasoline and diesel engine tune-ups and overhauls. Performs specialized work and repairs on engines, carburetors, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and other complex vehicle components. Repairs heavy equipment specifically serviced by the service center. Disassembles, repairs, services, reassembles, and reinstalls vehicle accessories and systems, including brakes, transmissions, hydraulic or pneumatic systems, cooling systems and radiators, air conditioning, suspension, vehicle generators, carburetors and fuel injection, starters, and pumps. Performs wheel alignments on all types of heavy equipment, such as crawler loaders, backhoes, and bulldozers. Operates and uses acetylene torch to repair equipment. Records maintenance and service data on designated forms. Performs preventive maintenance, as required.

* The minimum qualifications for the Fleet Technician Crew Lead position are: Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus six (6) years of experience in a related field. Completion of an accredited automotive, diesel or related certification program may substitute for required experience up to a maximum of six (6) months. Graduation with an Associate degree from an accredited college or university in a related field may substitute for experience, up to a maximum of two (2) years.
