Description

THE POSITION

The Equipment Mechanic III preforms highly technical mechanical inspections and repairs to the City's wide variety of heavy and light duty equipment and vehicles. This position provides assistance and training to mechanics in the shop when complex repairs arise. The Equipment Mechanic III will work closely with the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor in the daily operations, scheduling, and set priorities for repairs and preventive maintenance to be accomplished.

IDEAL CANDIDATE STATEMENT

The City of Sacramento Fleet Division is seeking an Equipment Mechanic III to join their team. The ideal candidate should be able to perform highly technical mechanical work on a wide variety of municipal equipment. They should have experience working in a unionized workforce and training staff in a lead capacity, while providing exceptional customer service. They should be goal-oriented, have a strong work ethic, able to multitask, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and knowledge of computer based maintenance management systems.

Under general supervision the Equipment Mechanic III performs and leads others in skilled journey level work in the mechanical repair and maintenance of light and heavy duty gasoline, diesel, alternative fueled vehicles and equipment, and other mechanical equipment; and to assign and schedule the work of an equipment maintenance shop; and to assign and schedule the work of an equipment maintenance shop or facility.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
The class receives general supervision higher-level division personnel. Responsibilities include indirect supervision of other equipment maintenance personnel.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Experience:

Five years of experience in the general maintenance, servicing, and repair of vehicles and equipment, including two years of experience on heavy duty gasoline and diesel driven equipment.

Education:

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

Substitution:

Successful completion of vocational education in the automotive, truck, or heavy equipment field may be substituted for up to two years of the work experience on a year-for-year basis.

PROOF OF EDUCATION

Should education be used to qualify for this position, then proof of education such as, but not limited to, university/college transcripts and degrees should be submitted with your application and will be required at the time of appointment . Unofficial documents and/or copies are acceptable.

An applicant with a college degree obtained outside the United States must have education records evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. Evaluation of education records will be due at time of appointment.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Driver License:

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of appointment. Loss of the Class C License is cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Ability to obtain a valid Class A Driver License during the probationary period. Individuals who fail to obtain the Class A License will not pass probation.

Assessment:

If considered for appointment, candidates must pass a pre-employment drug test.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:

Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.

3. Eligibility : Candidates who pass the Training and Experience Test will be placed on the eligible list. The hiring department may contact candidates for interview at any time during the life of the one-year list. Candidate’s eligibility expires one year from the date of notification of a passing score for the Equipment Mechanic III examination.

4. Screening Committee : (Pass/Fail)- All candidates that pass the examination and are in one of the top three ranks will have their application forwarded to the hiring department for review. The hiring department will select the most competitive applications for further consideration. Human Resources will only evaluate employment applications for the minimum qualifications, as stated on the job announcement, for applications selected by the hiring department.

5. Conditional Hire: Upon receipt of a conditional offer, the selected candidate must complete and pass LiveScan/fingerprinting; review by Human Resources, a pre-employment medical exam, controlled substance and/or alcohol test, and possess any required licensure or certification prior to receiving a start date from the Department. Failure to meet these prerequisites will be grounds for withdrawal of your conditional offer of employment.
