DESCRIPTION THE DEPARTMENT The mission of the Department of Public Works is “to maintain and enhance the City’s infrastructure and environment for the benefit of the public.” The Department’s core services are focused on providing for and maintaining safe and efficient infrastructure for the community, providing for sustainable environmental protection including water quality and waste collection and diversion, and safely and efficiently designing, constructing, delivering, protecting, and maintaining services for public facilities and public rights-of-way. The Department has six bureaus: Business Operations, Engineering, Environmental Services, Project Management, Public Service, and Transportation Project Management. The Department has over 580 budgeted positions with an annual operating budget of $250 million and an annual capital improvement program budget of $150 million. THE POSITION The Department of Public Works is seeking one part-time Administrative Intern to support the Waste Diversion Division under the Environmental Services Bureau. The Bureau is responsible for coordinating and partnering with local and regional stakeholders to develop and host educational events and workshops focused on services provided by the bureau which includes street sweeping, parking enforcement, and municipal solid waste collection.
Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period, and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES- Assists staff with public education and outreach to support waste reduction.
- Assists staff with the implementation of local and state ordinances related to waste reduction, recycling and waste prevention.
- Assists the Division at community outreach events.
- Assists with preparing memorandums and staff reports.
- Assists with the gathering of general data for use in administrative, fiscal and procedural analysis.
- May assist staff with social media outreach efforts.
- May provide assistance to staff in producing a variety of reports using Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILEMINIMUM REQUIREMENTS- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in junior or senior standing (proof of completion of 90 quarter units or 60 semester units required) with a major in Political Science, Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Graphic Design, Geography, Planning, Urban Planning, Engineering, Public Administration, Public Policy, Business Administration, Accounting, Marketing, or a closely related field OR
- Currently enrolled in graduate-level courses (proof required) with a major in Political Science, Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Graphic Design, Geography, Planning, Urban Planning, Engineering, Public Administration, Public Policy, Business Administration, Accounting, Marketing, or a closely related field OR
- Recently graduated from an undergraduate program (within one year of application submission) from an accredited college or university (proof required).
- Willingness to work occasional evenings and/or weekends.
- The ability to arrange necessary and timely
transportation for field travel, may be required for some assignments.
