Duties Description

Senate House State Historic Site was the home of merchant Abraham Van Gaasbeek, and was host to the first meeting of the New York State Senate under the newly created New York State Constitution in the fall of 1777. New York State acquired the property in 1887 to recognize its role in the formation of New York State and constructed a museum building on the site in 1927 to house and display the site’s collections.

Under the direction of the Park Worker 3, SG-9 at Senate House State Historic Site, the Building and Grounds Assistant will perform various maintenance and cleaning duties including, but not limited to the following:
• Mow, trim, seed, plant, remove, trash and snow, as well as other aspects of general grounds maintenance.
• Safely operate power-driven equipment (mowers, trimmers, blowers, etc.).
• Operate state vehicles and perform minor maintenance of site equipment.
• Complete cleaning tasks including but not limited to cleaning restrooms, sweeping, vacuuming, dusting.
• After a training period, participate in site security rounds and emergency protocols.
• This position involves physically demanding work in a variety of weather conditions for extended periods of time. This includes carry and move tools, materials, and equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
• Communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner.
• Adhere to the agency’s Code of Conduct Policy and ensure compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in the performance of daily tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

There are no minimum qualifications per Civil Service.

Additional Comments

OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Experience in grounds maintenance, facility maintenance, general carpentry, and mechanical experience preferred but not required
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be able to work weekend, holidays and occasional evening events.
