DUTIES

ANNUAL SALARY

$123,901 (flat-rated)

An Avionics Specialist is responsible for the installation, calibration, and repair of electronic systems used on aircraft. Duties may include routine electronic maintenance (wiring), new installation and completion projects (R&D), troubleshooting or localizing and diagnosing causes of equipment malfunction, replacement of faulty components, tracing circuitry as well as aligning and adjusting repaired equipment.

REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)

Four years of full-time paid experience in the installation, calibration, and repair of electronic systems used on aircraft including two-way radio communications, navigational equipment and instrumentation, autopilot systems, integrated flight systems, flight management systems, video systems (camera, recording, and microwave down-link), and other necessary instrumentation required for flight; or Two years of full-time paid experience of the type specified in Requirement #1, and : Completion of a certificate program or associate degree program in electronics technology, telecommunications, or computer science at an accredited college or trade school; or Successful completion of a U.S. military electronics technical course of 24 weeks or longer within the last 10 years; and A valid FCC General Radiotelephone license.

However, they cannot be appointed until the full experience requirement is met.Applicants must submit a copy of the valid FCC General Radiotelephone license at the time of filing. The copy of the license must be attached to the on-line application BEFORE the application is submitted. If the license is attached AFTER the on-line application has been submitted, it will not be available to the City and applicants WILL NOT be credited with having submitted the license. Applicants who fail to submit the certificate at the time of filing by attaching it to the on-line application will not be considered further in this examination.A valid Class C driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is required at the time of filing. Applicants will be disqualified and not eligible for hire if their DMV record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violation and/or at-fault accidents or a conviction of a major moving violation such as DUI.Candidates completing the examination process may be contacted by the Personnel Department to provide required proof of qualifying degree and coursework. Applicants who wish to expedite this process may attach a copy of their qualifying degree and transcripts to their on-line application at the time of filing in the Attachments section.Please note that qualifying education must be from a college or university accredited by a City of Los Angeles recognized agency. To meet anticipated hiring needs, only a limited number of qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the interview in the following order: 1) Applicants currently employed by the City of Los Angeles who meet the minimum requirements, or are on a reserve list; 2) Remaining applicants who meet the minimum requirements in sufficient numbers to meet hiring needs based on a random sampling of those qualified candidates. The examination will consist entirely of an evaluation of professional and personal qualifications by interview. In the interview, the following competencies may be evaluated: Analytical Ability; Attention to Detail; Self Management; Teamwork; Stress Tolerance; Technology Application; Safety Focus, including knowledge of: Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations pertaining to the operation, documentation, and maintenance of avionics and public safety mission equipment; safety precautions necessary for performing maintenance on aircraft; and Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: principles of electricity and electronic theory relating to avionics systems, flight instruments, public safety mission equipment, as well as various voice and data radio systems across the frequency spectrum; methods for installing, servicing, testing and repairing avionics systems, flight instruments, and public safety mission equipment to comply with FAA regulations and aircraft conformity; electronic test equipment, tools, and materials employed in the construction, servicing, installation, troubleshooting and repair of avionics systems; and other necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities.

Candidates will be notified by e-mail of the date, time, and location of the interview, which may be held in Los Angeles or on-line. It is anticipated that interviews will begin during the period of MONDAY, JUNE 9, 2025 to FRIDAY, JUNE 20, 2025.
