THIS RECRUITMENT IS PROMOTIONAL ONLY. YOU MUST PRESENTLY BE A FULL- OR PART-TIME REGULAR OR PROBATIONARY COUNTY OF SONOMA, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION, SONOMA COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS, OR SONOMA COUNTY WATER AGENCY EMPLOYEE IN ORDER TO APPLY FOR THIS POSITION.

The Sonoma Public Infrastructure (SPI) Department has requested a department promotional certification to fill a Lead Heavy Equipment Technician position. Only qualified permanent and/or probationary SPI Department employees on the eligible list may be eligible for referral to the department for the advertised position. This employment list may also be used to fill future full-time or part-time positions as they occur during the active status of the list.

The Lead Heavy Equipment Technician is an advanced journey level position that will take direction from the shop supervisor. In the absence of the supervisor, this lead position will take direction from management. The position will be responsible for training, monitoring, assigning/reviewing work, providing technical assistance, and assisting in evaluating the performance of interns, mechanics, and technicians. This position will also serve as the acting supervisor when the supervisor is absent.

Coveralls will be required and provided as a uniform. Occasional weekend or evening shifts may be required. Performance of job duties may be required in the field (outdoors) under varying conditions, including but not limited to roadside repairs and extreme weather.

This recruitment is being conducted to fill two Heavy Equipment Technician positions in the Sonoma Public Infrastructure Department. This employment list may also be used to fill future full-time, part-time, or extra-help (temporary) positions as they occur during the active status of the list. Minimum Qualifications

Experience and Education: Any combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, this would include three years’ experience repairing a wide variety of on/off road equipment, trailers, and medium/heavy duty trucks.

License:Possession of a valid driver’s license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential functions of the position.

AND

Upon appointment to a position in this classification, employees must obtain a State of California Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License by the completion of the probationary period. The license must be maintained throughout employment in this classification. Certifications and Licenses: Successful completion of the California Air Resources Board certification to perform emission compliance testing is required by the completion of the probationary period. The ASE (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence) Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician is highly desirable.

Special Requirements: Possession of small and large hand tools necessary to perform all assigned work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of: methods, tools, testing instruments, parts, and equipment used in the major repair, replacement, installation, and overhaul of on/off road equipment and medium/heavy duty trucks, including emergency vehicles, man lift vehicles, park maintenance equipment, road maintenance equipment, construction equipment, and generators (both stationary and mobile); safety diagnosis, and preventive maintenance inspection methods and techniques; techniques and methods of repairing, replacing, installing, and overhauling of on/off road equipment, trucks, and related component parts, including diesel, gasoline, electric, and alternate fuel engines, carburetors, hydraulic and electrical systems, fuel injection systems, transmissions, and differentials; the theory, care, and operation of diesel, gasoline, electric, and alternate fuel powered internal combustion engines and mechanical components for the maintenance and repair of on/off road equipment and medium/heavy duty trucks.

Ability to: perform specified tasks on the computerized system; assign the work of lower-level staff; diagnose and locate mechanical and safety problems, and determine appropriate corrective action; repair, replace, remove, install, and overhaul of on/off road heavy equipment and medium/heavy trucks, including emergency vehicles, man lift vehicles, park maintenance equipment, road maintenance equipment, construction equipment, and generators (both stationary and mobile), and related component parts without supervision; effectively use hand tools, electrical testing instruments, and machines in the repair, replacement, removal, installation, and overhaul of heavy construction equipment, trucks, trailers, and related component parts; perform emission testing and certification; read and write English, interpret manufacturers’ specifications; use a computer to organize data and generate reports; perform arithmetic calculations; follow oral and written instructions; work effectively with customers and vendors; work under varying field and weather conditions, and on weekends.
