SUMMARY: Under general supervision, assist with adult and youth programs. Provides Leadership and ensures safe swimming conditions in the pool(s), on the pool deck and in surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere promoting safety and engagement, within the City standards, policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Assists with adult and youth activities.
• Register new members; prints membership cards; makes facility reservations; answers phone calls regarding recreation programs and services.
• Performs customer service; answers questions; conducts facility tours; provides assistance regarding the use of facility equipment; assist with members and participants concerns.
• Provides work direction and training to seasonal and part-time staff.
• Performs general office duties, including filing and copying.
• Conducts general cleaning of the facility.
• Responsible for filling gaps in lifeguard and swim instructor schedule.
• Assist and oversee with the Aquatic rentals and parties.
• Maintains pool, equipment, and grounds to meet all necessary programs and regulatory standards.
• Check pool chemicals such as chlorine and PH levels and report to supervisors if required.
• Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
• Assist with special event planning as assigned.
• Count and handle large sums of money.
• Other duties assigned by supervisor.
• Employees may at any time be required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Knowledge:

• City organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
• Principles and practices of recreational programing and promotion.
• City codes and ordinances.
• Business and personal computers, and spreadsheet software applications.

Skill in:

• Handling situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, firmness and sound judgment.
• Providing efficient customer service.
• Understanding and applying City policies and procedures.
• Explaining City policies and procedures.
• Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City.
• Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum age of 18 years.
• Position requires two years’ experience in aquatics.
• Demonstrate proficiency in Lifeguard skills.
• Current/or must obtain Lifeguard Certification within 30 days of hire.
• Current/or must obtain Water Safety Instructor Certification within 30 days of hire.
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:

Possession of a valid Texas Driver’s license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

• Work is performed primarily in an outdoor work environment.
• May be exposed to extreme weather conditions.
• Must be able to hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
• See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
• The ability to sit for long periods at a time are required, as well as the ability hold breath under water when necessary.
• May be required to climb ladders.
