Classification Title: Student Services Professional II

Classification Salary Range: $5,083 - $7,228 per month.

The anticipated salary for this position is $5,083 monthly.

About the Department/Position:

Under general supervision of the Interim Program Director of the MSA, the incumbent will help coordinate CSU Dominguez Hills college-level student program and will be responsible for designing and implementing study groups, partnerships with academic affairs, graduate school preparation, workshops, Male Success Alliance (MSA) student retreats, and mentoring and career development opportunities; the incumbent successfully works with middle and high school students, and be involved in school governance organizations; community- based organizations and building partnerships to improve high school graduation, college enrollment, and college completion rates. The incumbent will be responsible for collecting and analyzing data and helping the Director of MSA meet operational goals and objectives, keeping abreast on current research and information relevant to the program and working with all stakeholders to maintain high quality programs and services.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities:

• Plan and create MSA Programming Curriculum designed to improve retention and graduation rates for Young Men of Color in higher education.
• Maintain a caseload of MSA students and monitor their academic success through academic advising, check-ins, and mentoring.
• Partner with key stakeholders and intra-divisional, and cross-divisional departments to provide holistic programming that emphasizes authentic and positive manhood identity, mental health, career and professional development, academic and social ownership and resourcefulness, help seeking behavior, financial literacy, etc.
• Participate in the hiring, training, and supervision a minimum of 8 MSA Champions/Student Assistants.
• Assign 80-100 first year male students to MSA Champions in Mentor/Mentee match.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two (2) years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
• Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.
• Valid California Driver's License

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of current research and trends among men of color throughout the educational pipeline.
• Experience working with middle, high school, and college students.
• Knowledge of academic, social, and emotional problems confronting students, especially young men, from diverse backgrounds.
• Interpersonal communication skills to clearly and effectively interact with individuals of varying ages and cultural backgrounds and effectively resolve disagreements and conflicts.
• Knowledge of fundamental school and academic programs principles and standards (admissions, registration, financial aid) to make effective judgements.

Preferred Qualifications:

• knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.
• General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
• Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
• Obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
• Advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required.
• Recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi aged value systems and work accordingly.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts.
• Rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned.
• Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.
