Position Summary:
Under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, applies the nursing process to deliver basic, safe, therapeutic care and administering medications for individuals or groups of patients. May provide patient care in a specialty area but not limited to: medical/surgical, labor and delivery, PEDS, and the emergency room. May work with high risk patients.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
This classification is the third level in a six level nursing classification series. The Licensed Practical Nurse II is distinguished from the Licensed Practical Nurse I in that the Licensed Practical Nurse II administers peripheral fluids intravenously. Some positions may require additional training in a specialty area. The Licensed Practical Nurse II is distinguished from the Registered Nurse in that the Registered Nurse is responsible for all patient care activities and the Licensed Practical Nurse II does not develop the patient plan of care.

Education/Experience:
Equivalent to graduation from high school and one (1) year of clinical experience as a LPN.

Licensing/Certification Requirements:
Current License by the Nevada State Board of Nursing to Practice as a Practical Nurse, and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Age Specific Requirements:
Individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide services appropriate to the age of the patient/client served on the assigned unit/department. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to review data relative to their age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the area's policies and procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical Requirements

Knowledge of:
Basic life support; nursing process (implementation and coordination of patient care); patient standards of care; disease process; medical terminology; human anatomy; basics of pharmacology and medication administration; Proper techniques for dressing wounds, removing sutures and staples, etc; Aseptic techniques; Nurse practice act; department and hospital safety practices and procedures; patient rights; infection control policies and practices; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures; age specific patient care practices.
Skill in:
Proper medication administration (except epidural and intravenous route); delivery of patient care; performing basic life support; maintaining sterile technique; using equipment associated with specialty area and the nursing process; communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds under stressful conditions; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Mobility to work in a typical clinical setting and use standard equipment, including stamina to remain standing and/or walk for extended periods of time, and strength to examine and treat varied patients, vision to read printed materials and a VDT screen, and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
