Maintenance Assistant (As-Needed)
Description
Job SummaryPerforms general maintenance and manual labor of a routine nature.
*The current temporary, part-time vacancy is in the Cemetery Division of the Public Works Department. The eligible list that will be established as a result of this recruitment will be used to fill other temporary, as-needed and/or on-call Maintenance Assistant vacancies that occur in the Public Works Department during the life of the list.
Representative DutiesDuties may vary depending upon division and assignment.Performs routine custodial, maintenance and manual labor tasks at various City locations.
Sweeps, picks up litter and disposes of trash, debris and heavy objects from beach area, restrooms, walkways, streets, alleys, sidewalks, City owned parking structures and other public use areas.
Empties and relines trash cans and recycle containers.
Assists in performing minor maintenance and repairs to City facilities.
Assists in loading and unloading of equipment and materials.
Secures buildings, including doors and gates.
Drives a variety of City vehicles and trucks.
Responds to inquiries from the public and City departments.
Follows all applicable safety rules and regulations.
Performs other related duties, as required.
RequirementsKnowledge of: Safe lifting techniques.
Safe work practices and procedures.
Basic vehicle and equipment maintenance.
Basic mathematics.
Effective customer service techniques.
Ability to: Perform continuous physical labor, including bending and lifting.
Lift and carry heavy objects.
Drive a City vehicle.
Learn to use a variety of tools.
Follow oral and written instructions.
Read and understand signs and follow directions.
Provide effective customer service.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with City employees and the public.
Skill in: Reading, writing and communicating in English at an appropriate level.
Dealing with the public in a courteous manner.
Education, Training and Experience: Completion of sufficient education and/or training to read, write and communicate at a level reasonable for successful job performance, as assigned.
Six months of recent, paid work experience performing general custodial, maintenance or repair work which has included the operation of a small truck or utility vehicle. Experience providing customer service in municipal government is desirable.
Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid Class C driver license.
